Why is this filter housing leaking at the threads?

Pentek Big Blue filter...It just keeps leaking from the threads (leak is from housing to adapter)

Its 3/4 NPT, I got myself a NPT to GHT adapter. I have thread tape on it...still leaks.

What am I missing here? Is the adapter not long enough to seal properly?

Leaking where? It looks like the hex bottomed out on that fitting before the threads were tight enough. Bodge fix is a lot more wraps of thread tape. You wrapping it the right way?

not sure why you have tape on GHT, GHT are not sealing threads, the seal relies on the washer . 2 thoughts I have , is your washer good and is it a flat washer mating up to the male thread or is it an oring

O ring yes, fair point didn’t really think on it!!

If the threads are not in far enough are there longer adapters available? Or is it all a standard length?

I have encountered this alot recently on cheap tapered threads.

The taper is insufficient or nonexistent. It should start to tighten up within a couple threads of starting.
I believe it happens with old, worn out tooling during production or just bad designing.

Get an adapter from a different supplier and see if that works. Hopefully it's the adapter and not the housing.

If it is the garden hose adapter that is leaking I don't think it is supposed to have an o-ring ?? Should be a flat washer. See if you can find a different washer. I have had a couple of instances lately where the cheap washers they sell at most stores simply will not seal. I found a stash of old school solid black ones that have solved a couple of leaks for me.

Why are the fittings backwards on the filter?

Tough to see, but that's looks like "OUT".

Get a brass NPT to GHT (Male) that fits the filter, make sure the washer on your hose is good and I bet your problem goes away.

It does look like that brass fitting threading into the black plastic housing may be bottomed out - perhaps not long enough. When I put in my filter system, I had to use teflon tape and teflon dope together to keep the brass/stainless steel to plastic/pvc threaded fittings from leaking.

What do you mean backwards?
This filter is before my car pressure washer and a bunch of PVC pipes...so its not going direct to the house spigot.

You should have a male fitting on the outlet side for the hose to hook to.

Would eliminate the leaking fittings.

Can you post a zoomed out pic, showing the inlet and outlet?

I'd use a longer brass ****** to get out of the filter housing, then use a female NPT to male GHT.

Ok I think I see what you mean -- but I'm not sure why that would eliminate the leak?

The garden hose isnt leaking, and I cant directly connect the garden hose to the filter housing since its NPT…The pressure washer itself is a female connection so the garden hose is hooked up that way to it, hence the need to go from female to female at the filter housing

It’s hooked up to a PVC above the garage which runs across and down closer to the actual spigot for the water source. So House Supply > to PVC > Then through the filter, then to the pressure washer, and to the hose reel > then out

You have a ton of unnecessary fittings.

Think of a normal hose setup, the big is male garden hose, the hose is female, then other end of the hose is male again and then the sprayer/nozzle is female.

Your "in" needs this:




Then the out needs this:



A little tape on the not side of each and that's it. No additional fittings and the leaks should go away.

If you're talking about the plastic filter housing, those **** (my whole house filter did the same thing with the PEX adapter).

It will probably be OK with several wraps of tape.

You can probably also find Female NPT versions of what I posted, and use a ******.
