Why are all the new tool handles becoming the soft spongy or rubber type? I can see they look good and feel good and would be great if your in construction but doing mechanical work they get dirty too quick and are hard to clean especially compared to the hard handle type. It's probably just me but after spending over a $100 on Snap On screwdrivers I'm fed up at them looking old and feeling old as soon as you use them.

I feel pretty much the same way.

Especialy in tools that are supplied to industry, it's an ergonomics thing. The ergo people recommend soft handles for repetative motion situations which may cause injuries such as carple tunnel.

Probably a trend thing or it was recommended by someone sitting in an office with a college degree that has never used a hand tool.

I have some great pliers but they have soft handles and are forever greasy so I can't use them everywhere I want to.

I don't know whether the soft handles make a difference to me but I do like the fact that the soft handles add some "heft" to the handle and make it thicker as opposed to the skinny handle. Makes it easier to handle and grab for me.
