I filed a longitudinal groove into the jaws of a large cheap slip jaw pliers, keeps the spring clamp from jumping out. Works great. Channelocks good too but you need clearance to do them sideways, my home made tool goes straight in.
edit: Sorry, no pics, I went out to grab it and I have like 15 pliers but not the one I want. It's too cold in the garage to do anything right now, I think I'll go out and get a heater today. This is the last winter without insulation and heat out there, gotta get a comfy place to hide from the wife.
