So not the usual wrench or screwdriver or socket question, so maybe it doesn't belong here, but I am going to put it here anyway.

I am looking for a wideband O2 sensor to use as a tuning tool. I need one now for my current project car (1987 Porsche 924S). I have had use for one previously, and I expect I will need one again. So I don't want one for permanent installation in a car, but one that can be used temporarily to help tune the car initially.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I use innovate. Works well, although I have had issues with the bosch sensor getting biased over time. Recalibrate if need be, I usually replace every few years.

How do y'all put the sensor in the exhaust? Put a bung in it? I was hoping for something more temporary than that, kind of like the tailpipe sniffers you see when you take a car to a chassis dyno.

Put a bing in and then put a plug in the bung when you take it out. And I’d also vote for the AEM. I don’t tune personally but I have several friends that do and that’s what they use.

Best is to weld a bung in as close to the engine as you can get it. The tailpipe ones work OK for dyno use because they are really only watching WOT. If you want to use it for part throttle the tailpipe location will get contaminated from fresh air and you won't get accurate readings.

For a tuning WB, I still have a very old Innovate LM-1 that is still alive and kicking. For quick tunes i'll pull out an existing O2 sensor and disable it in the tune while i'm tuning.

I like my PLX for datalogging. 15 years old and still going strong. I had 2 bad experiences with Innovate, but they are pretty well liked by most. I never liked my buddy's AEM because of the display on it, but maybe that has changed these days (that car likewise was built like 15 years ago and I haven't paid much attention to tuning in the last 10 or so.)

Position-wise I like to put mine about 18 inches back from the turbo if you have one, but you want it after the exhaust merges (unless you want to run one for each bank if you have 2 banks). You want it on the top side of the pipe, like 10-2 position, and before the cat if you have one.

I welded a bung in just past the merge 3~4 inches. If you try the tailpipe thing you can get reversion pulling fresh air up the pipe and then your readings are useless
