We discussed this a bit in my other post & this is what I've decided to do. I will have to build a 12x16 building in my backyard for a workshop now since my garage will be full, but that's ok. Back to the question at hand. My garage is 11' 8.5" wide & 25 ft long. My door is 8 ft wide & I want to go to a 9 ft door. The extension has to go to one side for me to accomplish my goal of getting the boat in there. From what I've gathered from the little I can find on this subject, I need to build a temporary wall to support the garage ceiling so I can replace the header. Where is the best location to place the wall? As close to the door as I can while giving me enough room to work? Outside under the eve supporting the trusses? Thanks for any advice/help.

As long as the trusses are running front to back of the garage (25' depth direction) and some one has not put scabbed on soffitt extensions on them, yes.. putting a support wall right against the door's header wall outside and tight up under the trusses would work. Just be sure your support wall is tight under the original truss joists..

If your temporary support wall will be pushing up against a vinyl soffit, the panels will flatten out a 1/2 in. or better when compressed, so need to allow for this when cutting your support wall studs so the trusses will not sag down the 1/2 in.. good luck. jmo

Yes, they are running from front to back. I don't know about any extensions on them. The house was built in 1963, if that matters. The underneath side of the eve is wood. I appreciate the advice. I knew I needed a temp wall but I couldn't find the info on where it should be placed.
