What do you use for a security system with your Insteon stuff? I'm looking for something that will accept wired NO/NC contacts to trigger events or alarms.

I'm not Teken, but here ya' go:

1. I don't believe Insteon should be relied upon for security / force protection. Insteon has many benefits in terms of HA but security, in my mind is not one of them.

2. There is no problem integrating portions of your security with Insteon. Twomanyprojects has already provided you with the most common I/O interface.

3. To clarify a few things for you and others. I have travelled down the whole integration path in both consumer, industrial, and government / fortune 100. There are many industrial solutions that would meet the whole integration with security and automation.

Whether it be process control, HVAC, water, electrical. Again, Insteon is not one of them because it uses power line / RF communications. In my home I use Insteon to augment, and (ADD) to the security system.

For example if the fire system should go off the Insteon system is tasked to turn on all interior / exterior lights to the home. One is to provide light for the occupants to be able to locate the exits. The other is to inform the FD, EMS, Police.

Keeping in mind the security system is also working independently by signalling the outside with 360 strobe lights & sirens.

The Insteon system is tasked to do the same thing if an intrude has breached the perimeter by turning all of the exterior lights, and key interior lights. Keeping in mid the security system is also acting independently of the other at all times, but aware of the Insteon system state.

The security system in concert would turn on all exterior (dedicated) high power motion lights. The same things I monitor for water, temperature, humidity, electrical, network, security. Are all extra layers deployed using Insteon which operates fine but should not be relied upon for the primary security system.

Insteon is not certified for life and safety and does not meet security UL standards which govern security / fire control.

So, in the end keep your systems independent of one another but link them so they are aware of the other.

You and I are of a similar mind. I have always designed security systems so that you MUST trip them to get in, but have a limited amount of time (measured in seconds) to 'authenticate' yourself before any action happens. I do this because if *I* can get in without triggering the alarm, so can someone else.

I'm thinking of going with the ELK Gold alarm system and then tie it into my Insteon stuff with the ISY Controller. Comments or suggestions? And if I'm stealing this thread, I apologize - we can take this private or I can start a new post.

Thanks!

I've had the second switch in for a while now, everything works great. I love being able to come home to the shop lights on and shut them off once I'm inside.

Some gotcha type things worth noting:

If you are connected to my home's WIFI network and happen to have or install the WEMO app, you can control my lights. I haven't had time to test this out with a guest WIFI network enabled but plan to for shits and giggles.

After the initial switch setup where it asks for my SSID/Passcode, the second switch didn't prompt me for this information. I run a separate access point in my shop with a different SSID to make sure my wireless devices in the shop aren't trying to get to the house if the signal strength allows.

The switches are DEEP. I have 3 x 4 gang boxes to control the lights/fans etc in my shop and the boxes are fed from the top down with conduit. I can't put these switches in the center locations of the top two boxes because of the wire fill. Not a huge deal if you use really deep boxes, but I didn't because they don't look clean.

Overall I'm very pleased with the product. I haven't put a metal cover plate on yet to test reception.

I'm up to 4 of these devices so far and am quite pleased. They seem to work fine with a metal cover plate too. I will be adding more as time goes on and will get my wife the Wemo slow cooker they announced at CES if it's ever released.
