I am looking for a wifi garage door opener for my carriage style garage doors.
From the bit of research I have done, I haven't found anything that suits me.
I am hoping somebody else has tackled this problem. I have attached a picture of what my doors look like

for the sake of closure on this matter and I know its old. But hopefully this can help somebody else in the future.
I went with the Franklin garage door opener for my set in the back.

They weren't too difficult to install, no wifi but I do have a key fob. They work great so far and the convenience factor is through the roof. Maybe I can find a wifi momentary switch later on to facilitate phone use

I have searched for a similar product and ran across this...

https://garageio.com/

I have not used them but I like the idea. With this product you can remotely control the opener with your smart phone. I will be looking into it more closely when I get to that stage in my shop build.

Thanks for updating this.
My carriage doors require one door to be closed before the other (the inverse on opening).
Does the Franklin door opener allow for that?

Yes the franklin door opener does allow for that. I did notice that you have set up the limit switches properly (which isn't difficult) to make it work for closing, i.e. if the wrong door opens a little bit further than the other, then it wont close properly

I have to say, this looks to be the best option for an add on I have seen.
Thanks for sharing

If you get a Liftmaster opener system with MyQ technology, you just need their internet gateway to talk to the opener. Their internet gateway link is below. Install the app on your smartphone/tablet and you can control garage door via any internet service. You can also setup alarm notification for your door. Example, if i accidentally leave my door open over anytime M-F from 9-5pm the gateway will send me a text message and I can close it remotely. Good luck.

We use iPhones and tablets on wifi or VPN to control our garage door opener. My garage came with an antiquated garage door opener and no remote, so my wife's brother just built a web page hosted on a raspberry pi with an arduino and a relay card to control the opener. With my VPN enabled I can open the garage or control lights from anywhere.total cost is about $60. We are working at adding sensors into the mix so that we can see remotely what doors are open and eventually tie it into our heat system too. I'll see if I can get some pictures of the setup.

OP: The technology you're asking is called "home automation". The current most popular technology is called "Z-Wave". People that owns Z-Wave install it themselves bc it's very simple.

My home is outfitted with z-wave switches and outlets but not device for my garage yet. You would spend about $100 for the controller/gateway/hub and the garage door switch. The controller/gateway/hub can control various other devices.

I have a Vera 3 controller.

You could do this with a Universal Devices ISY and 2 insteon garage door modules. The programs will take IF, THEN, and ELSE statements and it can all be controlled on your phone.

I purchased the homelink option for the franklin auto swing. It wasn't until after I had everything wired and conduit run. that I realized I needed to drill more holes in the control panel box to wire in the homelink. Looks like ill be saving it for my front set of doors, as the homelink option will allow you to open 2 sets of doors.
Not sure how much difference that makes, as none of my vehicles currently have homelink installed on them

I agree. The liftmaster 8500 with MyQ technology and the Internet Gateway is the way to go. I can always check my phone to see if the doors are opened or closed. Also good to check when the kids get home at night. I believe if you have a Chamberlain unit, you can buy the MyQ unit separately to achieve the Wi-Fi addition.

I'm gonna write a little program to do this - with a Raspberry PI, the PI Camera Module, a Nwazet PI Camera Box and Wall Mount, a WiFi dongle, and a relay controlled via GPIO

I hate it when I take off to work and I don't remember if I closed my garage. I literally drive back home and check..

Even though it is "homemade" the parts are commercially available (assuming you are referring to funks post) and the encryption or security should function the same as any other wifi AP.

If you are worried about someone hacking their way into your Garage you are probably famous, infamous or uber rich..

I'm not saying security is a bad thing obviously, just that your average thief trying to break into your Garage is not going to do it by cracking your wifi..

Sounds like a neat project.. I love those Rpi...

I used to do the same thing, get down the street and drive back because I had to double check my doors.. I got a craftsman homelink opener and now I can check it on my phone.. Saves me a lot of time!

problem with MyQ is that you cannot really "add it". I don't want to change my opener (that is uber quiet, I love it).

Also anything with a separate app gets annoying quick, one app to check your dropcam, one to check the garage door, one to check the alarm system, one to check your automated lights, etc.

you need a system that can connect to vera or smartthings or wink. myQ connects to Wink afaik, not sure about the others.

edit: seems myQ can be added to smarthtings too. garageio looks the best solution if you don't want to buy a new opener, it looks like it just replicates the remote trigger... and can be linked to smartthings too. http://community.smartthings.com/t/garageio-integration/3705/2

I agree, i probably would have done my own thing, but i ran across the opener when the craftsman tool store was closing.. Got a nice quiet belt drive with a bunch of other stuff for about $150..

That is actually the reason I haven't installed a Web enabled thermostat yet, i don't want to go through someone else's website and have another app to deal with ..

At some point I will make my own app to combine some of my home automation stuff.
