Has anyone found a slick motion detector that will use wifi to send an alert to your smartphone when it detects movement? I don't need a whole alarm system. I really just need one sensor that will alert when motion is detected.

Anyone found anything like that?

You can get cameras that will do that. Logitech is one brand. Set up the camera and plug it into an electrical outlet. It will send the signal through your house / garage wiring to your router and wifi. You can set the software to send you an alert to your cell-phone and, if you desire, you can watch real-time video.

I did not realize Nest acquired them

This wikipedia entry is very interesting:

"In June 2014, Dropcam was acquired by Nest Labs and in September, Dropcam joined the Works with Nest program. When the Nest Protect alarm goes off, Dropcam records a clip of the smoke or carbon monoxide event and saves it, regardless of whether the customer pays for Cloud Recording.Additionally, Dropcam will automatically turn on motion alerts based on the Nest Thermostat being set to "Away.""

Dropcam looks cool. I think I would prefer something though that has a base unit I could have in the bedroom that would wake me up in the middle of the night. I'm not sure my phone would wake me up. But I do want to also receive alerts on the phone, too.

I'm going to keep looking around.

Bayweb internet thermostats are pretty slick and have the capability to have hardwired or wireless add-ons for motion detectors, water bugs, etc. that will send alerts to your phone, but no base station really that you could have in room to provide alerts that I know of.
