Looking for any suggestions on a wifi thermostat for reznor garage heaters. Would like to keep it around or under $100
Would like to make the schedules on from the phone not the thermostat itself.
Would like it to go down to 40 degrees F.
Maybe someone has a suggestion that Im not thinking of?

I have an Insteon wifi tstat controlling my Hot Dawg that reports run time and cycles per day, but unless you have the rest of the home automation system in place, it probably wouldn't be for you. It isn't "stand alone" and doesn't need cloud services like the Nest or the Honeywell does. It is nice to be able to remotely warm up the garage before I get home.

I just installed the Honeywell, mentioned above. Pretty easy to do and I like the app.

I went with Sensi Thermostat. I did not like the Honeywell. I have two and love them. They are around $100.00 so it is at the price point you want.

I was a little worried about the Sensi. Some people where having issues with the app system being down a lot. It was recommended by a HVAC guy doing some repairs on my furnace, though.

I originally wanted to go with insteon and purchased the comfort kit but as soon as i hooked it up the app kept telling me my phone wasn't on the same wifi as my hub (it was). I read after the fact that insteon really caters to apple and not android. Has anyone had good luck with insteon/android.

I can't speak about the Smarthome hub controllers. I went with the Universal Devices isy994. More elaborate (and expensive) but much more flexible. My furnace will turn off when the garage door is raised and shuts off at 1AM if no motion is detected in case I forget.
Don't know either about Android or iPhone. I have a iPhone.

I have a Nest 2. It was $250, and the only benefit of having it is that it records how much I use HVAC each month.

Do any of these "free" cloud based services require a monthly subscription?

Is this a product you need to be on geek squad to set up?

This seems to be the norm when you ask about smart home type products. If you ask 10 ppl what there using you can get 10 different answers. Im not against spending more for a hub type system that you can do thermostats, lighting, and sensors. I just wish there was a stand out product line.

My Sensi has only went down once in 6 months. I have two and they are great. I even have them contacted to Alexa and they work flawless with that.

I just had 2 new Ac units and 2 furnaces installed. They even handle multi speed Furnaces and condensers.

Yes, it does require Geek Squad level or above work, or at least some interest/time from an enthusiastic owner. Not technically complicated, just time consuming to fine tune. The support forums at UD are the best there is with many supporters and questions are answered almost immediately.
I agree, I wish there was one HA technology that was clearly dominant and superior, but right now there really isn't. ZWave is trending the best right now. The UD Isy device supports Zwave and Insteon. The big push now in HA is Alexa and Google Home support for voice control.
It's the typical tech trade off.....easy to setup but limited functionality and insecure versus complicated but highly customizable and secure. The first usually also comes with a monthly subscription for the cloud service and when the company goes belly up you are screwed.

I have 7 Honeywell wifi thermostats and am very pleased with them. 3 of them are running Reznor garage heaters. I had to add a couple wires to power the thermostat and enable fan only mode, but otherwise the install and setup is pretty easy no straight forward. The 9000 series someone posted is overkill and not warranted for this use case. Can typically find the 6800 series around $50-$60 on EBay. If you want run time statistics, that's something you won't get with the Honeywell solution. That's the only downside if it's important. The web service is completely free, extremely robust, and comes with very well written mobile apps.

The notification portion of the service is invaluable for me, but doesn't sound like it would be for the OP. It can notify you based on upper and lower temp thresholds, and also in the event of communication failure (internet down or loss of power). Modern technology is wonderful!

I've tried and reviewed them all. The best on the market it the ecobee... Especially if you use the apple ecosystem at all.

Ryan, do you know if you can set the ecobee to below 40 degrees for heating? They say it goes down to 45, but nest said that too and I found out that I can set the nest threshold lower so when I am not at my shop for long periods of time I can just keep things from freezing rather than paying to heat a space for no reason.

Best depending on your criteria for what is important... and so for YOU perhaps it's 'the best'? But you don't share your criteria for 'best' in order to help a thread reader determine if that criteria matches there and thus would be best for them. [emoji848]

Just a FYI to some who are interested in buy one of these. Some utility's are giving rebates, when you replace your exsisting thermostat with a WiFi. I hope to get $150 back from both my electric & gas provider. So my out of pocket cost will be $10.

I bet your fun to party with. :)

My criteria was this: I want a thermostat that is simple and easy to use from both my phone and from the wall. I also wanted easy scheduling. I found that the ecobee was perfect....

Looking about getting one for my garage..... Do these t-stats require a router in my garage or do they produce there own signals that i can connect to?

Only need a router in your garage if the wifi signal is weak-nonexistent. The tstats link to your home wifi.
I looked for a hard wired tstat and didn't really find anything for a home system. The exception is the Insteon stat that uses its own proprietary wireless frequency and protocol. There may also be some Zwave stats but they will need there own special router.

I have the Honeywell Prestige IAQ (which seems to be what Motown has) but it's not a $100 setup. With the EIM and the Redlink gateway it's more like a $200 setup. The Honeywell app is a bit clunky but it's free and it does work well. It's pretty much a duplicate of what you see on the screen. I wish they would just let go and embrace HomeKit but that seems hard for them to do.

I plan to buy another one for my new shop and maybe a third one for the upstairs here at home.

With my nest, I found if I turn it off, it will start heating at the safety temp and that can be set lower than I need. This is a weird work around but it does work.
