Wiha Drivers – Some Manufacturing/Design Annoyances

So I purchased some Wiha Slimline insulated screwdrivers. While the tips are clearly quite nice, I have a few qualms with the manufacturing/design.

1 – The tip on the flat drivers do not run parallel to the anti-roll flat portions of the handle. It appears as though the blades are just randomly fixed to the handles without any consideration for their orientation. This creates two undesirable outcomes: First, in the case of the flat blade, the tip is hitting whatever it is resting on before the anti-roll handle and elevating the driver so that it wobbles and reduces the effectiveness of the anti-roll design. Second, it feels quite natural to place your thumb on the flat portion of the handle when starting a screw and it is irritating that the blade is randomly off axis.

2 – The handle feels nice, however, the black labeling on the top of the handle that indicates the size of the driver is rubbing off almost immediately. Also, the image that identifies what driver you are grabbing is completely random in it’s orientation to the actual blade position – Which again is completely random to the flat portion of the driver.

3 - There is a bar code that is printed directly on the handle. Not a big deal…Hopefully this will rub off with use.

I realize these complaints may sound very **** to some, but these drivers come highly recommended and I am just surprised that these easy to rectify manufacturing problems haven’t been addressed. I was really hoping to love these drivers. Klein, Milwaukee, Wera have managed to put out tools without these issues so it is clearly doable at around this price point.

... You have come to the right place. There are some here who relate to your grievances. Personally the performance of wiha screwdrivers nullifies all your "complaints" to me.

I feel your pain on the barcode. Knipex seems to do the same thing on some stuff.

I received a set of PB Swiss drivers for Christmas and the spot on orientation was one of the first things I noticed. That would bother me too.

Interesting. I cant believe I actually went out to the garage to look...

I have the exact same SlimLine set (PH2 3211 & 5.5mm 3201). On mine, the flats of the blade are perfectly parallel to the flats on the handle. The slotted identifying image on top of the handle is also parallel to the flats of the blade. So, different than yours and I'm assuming mine are closer to what you were expecting. :dunno:

There is a bit of wear on the "Wiha" lettering on the handle from use but the identifying marks on the top of the handle look like new so far. Mine are a few months old....

I have 30+ Wiha drivers, most purchased 3+ yrs ago. the slotted end aligns with the handle flat on all except for a few. Maybe they're not being as careful now. I agree about the marking on the end of the handle, this should be branded in. The tips really do last, so no other complaints

So after looking my micro finish are all aligned but my insulated 3 out of 6 were slightly off. Some of mine have the logo and other markings worn off. They work great tho and are one of my new favs they produce quality stuff, but no one is perfect.

The insulated one are from 2014
The micro finsh are from 2016
The precision stuff can't be aligned ?

all these things taken into consideration they are still the best insulated drivers for my money. Mine aren't perfect the same way you describe but honestly when I'm using them, they are simply irrelevant.

Never really noticed but the top orientation on mine are the same as the OP. I remember getting a pretty good sale price on these. Maybe they were factory seconds? Seems like Wiha could do better but I love the screw drives.

Yeah, just seems like a cheap and easy fix for Wiha. Who wouldn't pay $1 more per driver for these minor problems to be resolved? This is their premium insulated driver - The SlimLine style.

I wonder if I did receive Wiha seconds..? Ordered from Zoro @ 25% off.

I also got the Milwaukee insulated drivers which have none of the issues I complain about, despite being made in Taiwan. How well the tips will hold up, I don't know.. But they seem nice and have great reviews..

Mine are not the slim line for reference just the std insulated nor should that make a difference. And to your complaint only Wiha can give you more information. Best of luck with your inquiry...

I personally think your way overthinking this.

a company that makes 10s of thousands of drivers (if not 100s) is bound to have some issue every operation has some sort of reject rate as well as some that are somewere inbetween or just fly under the radar.

It Could just be the hung over guy on Monday morning.

Do you honestly believe that wiha would sell seconds to a company for distribution? Something tells me that sounds a little far fetched.

Well what do you know - my slimlines are just a little bit off too. All other flavors are dead nuts on.

Great, just another thing to look for. The same so-called anomaly exists on my insulated set as well, but I'm not at all bothered by it. Just an FYI, Wiha is slowly outsourcing production of some of their popular hand tools. Its not a surprise in this day of age every company is finding a way to cheapen a soft spot. ;)

My love for Wiha just isn't what is used to be. Some stuff is nice but I've found better on most things so I don't buy Wiha much anymore.

Yeah, they started to make crappy products. Their slimbits are slimbit holders are really bad.. If they didn't have Wiha printed on them I could swear they were made by some unknown chinese manufacturer.

I actually ordered a set of slimbits and a holder, and returned it because the whole thing just felt cheap. Not like any of the other tools/sets I'd bought from them before.
