So I just received 6 dynamic handle screwdrivers today from the Wiha outlet. Got them for a good price. However, upon opening one of the packages I get the following warning....Warning, This product could expose you to Chrome6, DEHP, and Phthalates. These chemicals are known to the state of California to cause cancer. And then info for the website www.P65warnings.ca.gov.

To me this is concerning. I'd appreciate more information and opinions. Thanks

Prop 65 is nonsense. I got that sticker on brass hammers, electrical cords, etc. Basically, exposure to anything and everything can cause cancer and birth defects.

EDIT:

"Operating, servicing and maintaining a passenger vehicle or off-road vehicle can expose you to chemicals including engine exhaust, carbon monoxide, phthalates, and lead, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. To minimize exposure, avoid breathing exhaust, do not idle the engine except as necessary, service your vehicle in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves or wash your hands frequently when servicing your vehicle. For more information go to "

How retarded can that state be. :lol_hitti

If your hand tools had been made during the second World war, that stuff is highly toxic and you never want to breath that stuff, I repeat do not clean those tools using any wire wheels.

Today I don't think you have to worry all that much, with the modern methods of manufacturing them. But back during the war metals were in short supply and they used different methods to plate those older tools.

While we probably shouldn't seek out harmful products to use, that may be difficult...

Existing on Earth has been known to expose you to a wide variety of chemicals and materials known to cause death and disease. To avoid exposure, ummm...

Not existing isn't an option.

You could live in a bubble, but what is the bubble made from?

Prior to World War II, it was common practice for manufacturers of ceramic dinnerware to use uranium oxide in color glazes. The Homer Laughlin China Company was no exception, using this material in the original “Fiesta Red” glaze, among others.

In 1943, the U.S. Government stopped all civilian use of uranium oxide because available supplies were needed for the war effort. Homer Laughlin stopped producing the red glaze color at that time and for that reason. Nonetheless, this interruption in production is believed to be the source of the rumor that Fiesta’s red glaze was removed from the market because it was radioactive. In truth, the red glaze emitted far less radiation than some other consumer products. Following the lifting of wartime restrictions, Homer Laughlin again began producing the red glaze in the 1950s, using a depleted grade of uranium oxide.

Homer Laughlin stopped all use of depleted uranium oxide in 1972 and it is not used in Fiesta Dinnerware which is produced today.

Your profile says you're in Ohio, where those chemicals are perfectly safe, so you shouldn't be concerned. Members in California may consider themselves warned.

We had to add that sticker for Ca. because the steel in our product contained trace amounts of lead. Less than .01%. Basically, anything sold in Ca. causes cancer.

It does cause cancer, no matter if you are in Ohio or California. However, we are talking about constant exposure for many years. The warnings are just their way of protecting themselves.

Mowkep,

I interpret this to mean that you should not use these screwdrivers as a fork, not even the Phillips. Also, avoid them at weany and marshmellow roasts, don't want to make the kids sick. Besides, most screwdrivers don't have shafts long enough to keep ones hand out of the fire.

About 10 years ago I was sent to Southern California on a work assignment. Was buying nuts and bolts in a recently opened Fastenall and grabbed several cans of spray lubricant from the store shelves. When they were rung up, the checkout computer indicated to the clerk that they could not sell those products in California. They must have set up the store using a standard stocking list and I guess I was the first person to try to purchase. That was unexpected.

Hang in there,

Mark

I guess I'm having a wtf moment. I've always changed my own oil. I know the risks. I work with metal sometimes dry machining. Other times using oils, coolants or cutting fluids. I had some coolant splash me in the eyes once and they became inflamed. Warnings for these things are easy to see and understand. It's just seeing that a screwdriver is now a carcinogen threw me. I've never had a hand tool with that warning. I will not be ingesting them or inserting them internally. Maybe I should put them in an air tight container and just stare at them.

The prop 65 warnings are stupid, they are overused to the point of being meaningless. There are some situations where they can be appropriate but not on literally everything. One time I was traveling on a Amtrak train and they had prop 65 warnings that diesel engine exhaust causes cancer in each of the cars.

consumers end up paying more for the products because of a cottage shakedown racket that has emerged as a result of prop 65. Because of the legislatively sanctioned extortion, companies are starting to include prop 65 warnings on everything, even naturally occurring food and drink items.

For one perspective on the topic, see http://prop65scam.com/lawsuit-abuse/

Just be sure you don't use a hazardous air tight container with a prop 65 warning on it.

Other states have snow to worry about............we have everyday objects to make us sick. Common sense, physics, biology, and what makes the world tick and somewhat predictable, do not apply in Liberal Kalifornia.

Be warned, taking and posting pictures of screwdrivers online is known to cause cancer in CA.

Prop 65 had good intentions, but it went ridiculously overboard, especially since it tends to ignore the context in which items are used. For example, you don't typically grind up chrome plated or stainless-steel screwdrivers and snort the powdered metal and plastic, which would really be about the only way to get significant chromium exposure from one.
