Hi all...

In my last order for nutdrivers from Wiha, I picked up a few Phillips and Slotted drivers with "Microfinish" grips. Very different than what I was expecting, but I used them a bit yesterday, and I think I like them so far.

Those who also own some Microfinish handled tools, how do you like them? How well have they held up? Does the rough surface finish stay that way, or smooth over time? Any thoughts on these grips?

Hey birdmobile - side question for you

Do the wiha nut-drivers have flank drive profile?

Am looking to upgrade as mine are old scool hexes.

Hey birdmobile - side question for you

Do the wiha nut-drivers have flank drive profile?

Am looking to upgrade as mine are old scool hexes.

I checked and this is what I found.
I ordered metric nut drivers from 3 different Wiha styles - the hollow handled, the softfinish standard, and the softfinish heavy duty.
The hollow handled all have flank-drive looking geometry, with noticable corner indenting so as to avoid driving the fastener corners.
The other 2 styles have smooth edges on the hexagons, but they looked slightly curved to me (maybe because of my aging eyes)... but I don't think they are completely straight. This would, of course, be another way of accomplishing the same end - to relieve pressure from the fastener corners and re-locate the applied force more toward the center of the hexagon faces.
Hope this answers your question... I hope someone else with better eyes than mine or firsthand factory knowledge will chime in if I'm wrong about the curvature.

Awesome info, thanks. Hopefully some more folks will chime in on feedback on the microfinish handles. I've seen good things written about them here, but never used 'em myself.

why are you willing to try 3 different kinds of Wiha, but not their primary competitor Wera, which many folks like even better? :headscrat

I already have a full set of Wera electricians insulate screwdrivers with amti-camout tips. Bought them at a pawn shop years ago. They are fine, I just like the Wiha handle geometry and feel better than the Wera style.

P.S. I bought the 3 different styles of Wiha nutdrivers to get all the sizes I was after, they don't offer all metric sizes in one style.

I'm surprised nobody has commented on Microfinish handles yet... are they really that uncommon around here?

I have the earlier style Wiha MicroFinish grips. I think the only real difference is the black plastic vs I think the red used today. I like them as well as any set I have but they haven't changed my life or anything.

I have the Wera chisel drivers as well and while a totally different grip shape, they feel better for ********* work for some reason. The only real downside with them is that the grips do not clean up very easily unless you use a real aggressive solvent.

I have a number of Wiha insulated screwdrivers that I use regularly and the handles have held up well. I'm not sure if the insulated drivers have the same finish as the Microfinish though.

I'm with you there !! Gimme a Klein !

Microfinish is for mechanics hands - oil/greasy to help stop slipping in your hands . While I love Klein cushion grips for screw drivers, they are a bit... difficult to use when the hands get greasy- even tougher IMO than standard solid acetate.
