I'm thinking of a different place to put a 36" man door in the side of my garage (garage isn't built yet). Concrete guys are coming next week!. Right now my plans show the door on the east side of a 30' wall. I'm kinda wanting to put it on the other side closest to the house but that side has 4 1/2 feet (outer dimensions). I'm going to assume that's not going to work?

If its a poured concrete wall I would go with 44".
Allows for 2 2x6 on each side of door.

Thanks. Yes, the garage will be poured concrete with stem walls attached to the house, so there will be the opening in the concrete for the man door which needs room for the 2x6 framing. Wasn't sure if I had enough room to do all this. If the door were simply going on a slab then no question it could, but since I have only 54" to work with (exterior dimensions) it may be too close for comfort.

Not sure if its a shear wall....kinda new to all this construction stuff and learning. I'm not at my computer but if you can imagine this, the garage will be attached to the house on the east side. Where the house foundation ends on the east running south to north, I am going to have that bump out 4' 6" to the south the corner east. That inside 8" thick concrete stem wall will be flush with the house foundation. Once it bumps out 4' 6" it will corner right. So, that 4' 6" wall is where I don't know if it will be safe to put there. That wall will probably be supporting 2 trusses.

The concrete guy would pretty much have 6" to form up either at the start of the bump mout or before the inside corners to the overhead door opening. Sounds like a bad idea, huh? I guess I should have bumped it out to 34'.

You can't put an opening in a shear wall. If you're acting as your own GC you need to know this info before making a change.
