I am working on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata SE turbo.

Question for those who own the BlueDriver obd ii reader:

I am looking for an obd ii reader that will read airbag DTCs and be able to clear the DTC. I have a Airbag warning light that is on while I am driving.

I found out that I need to change the clock spring. After install a new clock spring, will the BlueDriver obd ii reader be able to clear the Airbag warning light?

I leave a Blue Driver plugged into my OBD2 on my 2008 Nissan Xterra (around 240k miles). I have used it fairly often to clear miscellaneous codes. I have used it to clear BCM codes (C1710/C1711 rear TPMS need replaced) and I have a continuous ECM (P0420/P0430 catalytic converters are way past gone). If you input your VIN it says “enhanced diagnostics supported”. I have no experience that it will clear air bag lights but the literature says it will. I have no reason to doubt the claims and the unit is super inexpensive - like $100 or something.

I doubt it. But you may get lucky.... once you disconnect the battery, change part and reconnect the battery it MAY turn the light off on it’s own if the system doesn’t see the fault any longer. No guarantees on that but it is possible. You have nothing to lose, if the light remains on after the repair then you find the device to shut it off.

Yes, at least on my 2013 Dodge product.

However, it doesn't fix the underlying problem. The light will come back if there's a problem.

The airbag light will continue to turn itself on until the problem is fixed. You don't even need a scanner since the system will turn it off once the self-test passes post-fix.

Thank you for all the replies. I really appreciate it.

Do you prefer the BlueDriver obd ii reader over similar hand held units?

I have a Craftsman hand held unit which is a rebadged Innova but it does not read SRS. I used an Innova hand held unit from Oreily's. The Oreily's Innova read more types of DTCs than my Craftsman but it did not find any DTCs.

I found out that I need to change the clock spring. After install a new clock spring, will the BlueDriver obd ii reader be able to clear the Airbag warning light?

If the clock spring is the problem, the warning light will self clear when the repair is done. The scan tool will not be needed.

If the clock spring isn't the problem, the warning light will come back.

On my Dodge, the airbag system tests itself after the dash "bulb check". If it fails, there is a "warning ding" and the airbag light illuminates.

I had a "B1BB9" code which is translated as "Airbag Squib Circuit Coupling" by Blue Driver. Searching for this did not provide too many relevant results, and the clock spring code came up different. Codes reported may vary based on vehicle year. Although the wires are not shared, a bad clock spring seems to also likely mean possible total or intermittent loss of anything controllable via steering wheel buttons.

I had no loss of steering wheel button control.

"Squib circuit coupling" seems to refer to the wires that are part of the airbag assembly itself. "B1BB9" is not a clock spring code, far as I can tell, for my vehicle, so I could have a problem elsewhere.

Unfortunately, the problem went away by itself, which ***** because that means that the problem can come back at any time. Or not. You never know.

I suspect that there is a known connection/corrosion issue somewhere.

Next time the light comes on, I'll scan it, but I'll probably end up taking it in.

I have the Bluedriver and like it. Bought it to troubleshoot an SRS light as my older/less expensive OBDII scanner only read engine codes. Depending on the model/year of vehicle, Bluedriver reads SRS, ABS, HVAC, Trans and Engine codes - look at their website for detail by model/year. As others have said, it won't clear an SRS light but it will tell you the code. The light goes out after you fix the problem.
