This forum has inspired me to finish the inside of my detached garage. Its 20' x 22' with 2x8 ceiling joists 16" on center. Will this hold 1/2" drywall or should I use something else?

I have 2x4 joists 24" on center holding 5/8" drywall. Shouldn't be a problem.

It depends ! Are your 2x8s part of a truss system? If so, then yes, if not, then i would assume now that they are sagging and will sag even more with drywall.

Need more information please.

2X8's are commonly used in attics as ceiling joist. Being it's a garage, use 5/8" type 'X'...fire rated. Unless the spans something rediculous.

As a builder I have never seen 2x8's used as a bottom chord of a truss unless it's for storage above or a span of 40' or more.
It also depends on the species of wood. You can span alot more with Douglas Fir than with spruce/pine/fir.
Let's assume it's spruce/pine/fir, #2. Figuring a 10 psf live load and a 5 psf dead load and no storage load above it's maximum rated span is 20'5". That is from inside to inside on the walls. Remember, this is the maximum, You will probably have some deflection in the joists if you drywall it.
Check for a stamp on the wood. S-P-F will mean spruce, pine, fir. There should also be a number stamped 1, 2, or 3, or it might say select (which is also #1). If you can find this info post it and I can give you the span rating.

I don't think he needs to use the 5/8 fire rated stuff. He said it is a detached garage.

thanks guys

the 2x8's are regular ceiling joists - not part of a truss. I added a joist leveler when I built the garage - an L shaped (2x4flat 2x6vertical) across the top of the joists in the attic. This may help slightly

Also, I added 4' deep by 8' wide closets on each side of the front of the garage with new closet walls that had to be sledgehammered into place. That reduces my span to around 16' for most of the garage.

I have finished drywalling the ceiling with 1/2" and looks ok so far

thanks again

Depending on the size of the rafters, and alignment you could bolt 2x4s veticle from the ceiling joist up to the rafters.
