Williams S 51 Ratchet Repair

Recently I was given a partial Wards set with a Williams S 51. My Buddy's teenage son had tried to "clean" it up and turned the pawl too far and it got jammed. My question is, how do I remove the selector so I can move the pawl back into position? It looks like it would just press out but I don't want to break it. Thanks

Got any pics of the other side and pawl area? Do you have a copy of the parts diagram for this ratchet?

There is a little pin inside the pawl. Remove it and the pawl comes out

That's exactly the problem with mine. At least the kid didn't try to force it back around, but I almost tried. I'll see if I can find the pin in the pawl and I hope I can get it out. I wonder why I couldn't find your old post when I did a search?

I can't see any pin holding in the pawl unless you mean the selector. I'll wait a few days before trying to press the selector out. The ratchet is 60+ years old and I don't want to break it.

Isn't there a GJ member who collects old ratchets? I think he's from St. Louis.

Thanks! I'll have to go back and look for that pin again. It appears that the bottom of the selector is threaded and once the pin in the pawl is removed, then the selector can be removed and then the pawl should come out.

Oh, yes, I got it apart allright.

I just took another look for the pin. It's not visable. The only way I'm going to get it apart is to try to force the selector to unscrew and break the pin. I have a bad feeling about this.

I've had 2. On the first one I hulked out on it as described in thread I linked.
That was almost a year ago and I think there are probably still pieces of it in the far corners of my basement.
For the 2nd one I did what you are going to do, break the pin and just make a new one.

I was thinking of placing the selector in a vise and then twisting the **** out of it until the pin breaks. Good idea or bad?

That selector is probably soft cast metal be careful your vise jaws dont gouge it up.

Good News
I put the selector in the vise and gently applied pressure. The pin snapped in three pieces. I removed the selector and the pawl. I used a piece of aluminum rivet to replace the pin. I didn't want to use a nail.

Bad News
I put the pawl, pin, and selector back into the ratchet and turned it the wrong way. Back to step one

Good news
Repeated step one and this time turned the right way. I don't know if the rivet will hold up, but atleast I know how to repair it if it breaks.

Bad news
The batteries in the camera were dead

The rivet should hold up fine. It only gets pressure when you shift and only against the detent ball spring.
