New guy here....live in Rowlett, TX. I am trying to have a somewhat metal shop in my garage....like I said TRYING....Hope to talking with you guys, this is one cool site.....


I just picked up a new to me vise today....and it is a big son of a gun! I believe the style # on it is 09-600. It is a bullet type vise. Not a swivel base type. It is is pretty good condition, although it is missing the handle piece( the part you turn to tighten and loosen) not sure that is what you call it. I was told you can buy a replacement handle for it. The only other issue I see is that jaws have to be adjusted to line up correctly when almost closing point. The guy said it is missing part of the key on the bottom that won't let it line up automatically. Not sure about this?? Seems like it can be fixed fairly easily?? Can someone give me some insight on this issue?? Where is the best place to buy these parts for it? And also, what was this vise intended for exactly? Thanks for any info you guys can give.

The key is at the back of the moving jaw on the bottom. The arrow in the pic is pointing at it.

How bad are the jaws misaligned? If it's not much you may want to leave it be. If it's extensive you can probably get a new key. My key is riveted on though. I'm not really sure how you'd damage the key. It is pretty well protected. Anyways, carefully unscrew the moving jaw all the way and have a look. Just don't drop it!

Many of those 600's had a two piece front jaw assy. If the front channel bar actually goes into the front jaw assy and its not all one piece the fix is easy. On this one,I had help getting it onto the press, it straightend out under about 500 lbs. It actually can be made to move. If its the front spindle asy, your missing, you've got problems. A new spindle out of Wilton gas got to cost alot.

In this pic, the jaws are lined up just right...and that was a result of me just moving them together by hand.

this one is the shot of the handle end.....which the handle is missing though. the vise opens and closes very smoothly, just no handle attached.

If you look at the pics I just posted, this is what my vise looks like unless you correct it by hand.

That vise looks fixable to me. First you have some kind of problem with the guidebar on the bottom. Unscrew the moveable jaw all the way and pull it out. Take some pictures of what you have both outside and inside. You may not have any guide bar at all.

The missing handle is not a big problem. You will need to get some steel rod of the right diameter and figure out how you want to put some balls on the end. I aways wanted to make some "bullets" for the end instead of round balls LOL.

Thanks man....yeah, this vise is actually in real good condition as far as I can tell. Doesn't look like anybody welded on it or grinder on it either. This coming week I will try and open her up. I was thinking of getting some type of really strong steel to make a handle out of. Thanks for the info!

I have a 600s myself, frozen shut, long term project. I do have a swivel base though.

The key should be a piece of stock that fits into that groved channel at the bottom of the movable round front jaw assy. . If there is nothing in that channel , then you are missing the key stock or Keyway as we call it.

Hey TB!
In this photo, I put a piece of white paper behind the keyway to sort of highlight it. It is the piece of metal stock that sticks out of the round slide about 2/3 of the length. You can trust autopts in his suggestions....except when he says to ship any Wilton to him for repair.....LOL

Yeah autopts is more or less the Wilton guru around here. He won't lead u astray. What color is the above Wilton? It looks sharp! My 800s may need to follow suit, if you don't mind.

Thanks for that pic....and I don't think my vise has that key way on it or it is missing a piece of it at least.....I will take better pics of it and post them!
