DO you think this would be a good all around vise for $250 or wait for a reed or parker with some pipe jaws on it

Yes, but I'd use it carefully. If you are patient maybe keep looking.

An 8" Wilton Tradesman would be a hell of an all-around vise. And that one has pipe jaws, too.

What kind of "careful use" do you propose for an 8" vise???

Tedsters: if you are planning on buying it make sure to take the dynamic out and also maybe remove the dust cover (take a small wood dowel or even a 1/2 inch thread or some small round steel stock) to push it out. with a dent like that on the dust cover it may have been dropped and since its probably 110 pounder it could have cracked.

being a Tradesman it isn't quite as valuable as their Bullet models or C series vises, but it does look like it says Made in the USA on it's side. i can't say i see those often around here and paid more than that for a C2 so your call on value.

another thing to check on those Wiltons is at the base of the tube where the notch is on the static jaw that is sometimes cracked from being dropped or mis used.

good luck

just saw your question about rating it against a C1. the 8 incher is a much bigger vise so depends on what you are using it for. i'd say the C2 is closer to a 1780.

do you guys think this 1780 is as tough as the C1

How do you define tough? It is 8 inch, the C1 is 4 1/2", tough comparison at the get go. C1 are definitely more dense and considered Wilton's top of the line. But an 8" Tradesman is $1000 brand new. If it is in good condition, it would be a great deal, to keep or flip.

I put it in the same class as a C1 because of the weight there almost identical

No idea, never seen a C1 in person. I do however have a mint 1760 that while is a nice vise just doesn't seem as beefy as it's square slide brethren. I'd say it is a nice machinist type vise. It now belongs to a friend that at worst will probably use it to hold peanut butter jars while opening. :lol_hitti

Agree with DIF on the dented dust cap issue.

See above, and I'm fairly certain all the tradesman series have pipe jaws.

Tedsters: Wilton did make a few Tradesman vises in China so if it is only 50 pounds it might be one of them. You might PM Orchidlane (I think that's his handle) because he has an 8 inch Wilton Tradesman he just told me weighs 110 pounds and he owns a few Wiltons. also Zoomieport has a few Wiltons.

You can see Made in USA clearly in the pictures he posted.

I have a 1760, and I have never had any regrets about buying it. There's nothing about it that makes me want to "use it carefully." It's not a C-series butit's a heavy-duty, malleable iron, US-made vise. An 8" would be more of the same.

Tedster: your 956 sounds awesome. i have one that works great, but it's had a hard life so i use it for my outside work. since it's on a 200 pound stand it's a pain to move in and out, but it's good exercise and i don't like the thought of leaving a big old vise outside in my neighborhood.

Zrexxer: i saw the Made in USA, but he also said it weighed the same as a C1 which are about 45 pounds. now that Tedster agrees it weighs in at 110 i agree it is plenty of vise for almost any job and not an imported lightweight vise. sounds like the 956 will be a nice match for each end of the garage.

here's a few pictures of my Parker 956 to add a little color to your thread. any pictures of your 956 that you are picking up to add please do.

I WAS WRONG the C1 that i used to have weighed close to 80lbs only a couple pounds difference in my 974-1/2 parker.....the C2 is close to 110lbs so yea the 1780 is probally a dang nice vise i will stop in the machine shop where i work and look at my sons 1780 and see what i think

Tedsters: i might have underestimated the C1 because it probably weighed more like 60-65, but i think 80 is a bit on the high side. I've owed 3 of them and don't have one today, but they are great vises.

whatever the case the 1780 is more like my C2 that i think weighed in at close to the 110 your 1780 weighs and it a stout vise.

the one picture of the Parker vise's jaws looks a heckuva lot better than the jaws on mine and if i remember correctly that vise is about 130-140 pounds so make sure to screw that bench into the wall if you are not mounting it on a heavy stand or steel bench.

The Wilton 1780 is a "whole heap" of all around vise...

The other 8"er in Wilton's lineup is the 800/800S and they weigh over 200 lbs...

The 800S is 238 lbs, I believe...

As a workbench "user", it'll do 99% of what you want a vise to do...

The difference in Wilton's Tradesman and Machinist vises is illustrated in the attached photo---1755 vs 500...

the C1 i had you couldn't hardly tell any difference at all of picking it up or my 974-1/2 if i remember right the parker was 77 or 78lbs

Is there a difference between an 1780 and 1780A?

there may be the 1780 pipe jaws have a spring clamp on the back of them to hold them in place in the jaws, the 1780A could possibly be held in with a screw thru the front but i think they are the same vise

Tedsters: can you measure the swivel base of your son's 1780 and/or the one you are buying because i keep forgetting to measure my C2 and 1760 for Verg? he has a broken or missing swivel on his C3 and wants to see if other big Wiltons swivel bases will work so he might be able to buy a used one instead of a new $200 one from Wilton. thanks and sorry Verg but i'm heading out of town tomorrow so maybe Tedster can get you a measurement before i get back.

Drivesitfar thanks for the assistance again! You have been extremely kind in your help. Tedsters if you can assist that would be great. i acquired a c3 not too long ago with out a swivel base. the measurements of my C3 vise bottom are:
8'' outer dia
close to 6-7/8'' inner base Dia with 3/32'' step
5/8'' bolt holes.
I found part number interchangeability on a site with wilton parts diagrams per vise. But don't trust the interchangeability it suggests. I find it sorta ironic that you created this 1780 thread as i am in the process of negotiating for one today now and have the very same questions you brought up!

The Wilton C1s you had were probably older pre 1970s and those weighed less at around the 70 pound range and the current c1 model at 80 pounds. The early Wilton vises have more hollow spots then the current models which is evident when you compare the weights.

Rusty: you are correct that i had older C1's. i know one i had was a 1945 and the other was a 1957 which i think both weighed less than 60 pounds. interesting that Wilton decided to add a bit of weight to the newer versions.

Verg: good luck on getting the 1780 and happy to help you try to find a fix for your C3.

I will have to take the vise off from the base i will see what i can do if i get the 1780 no problem i am not really sure if i will be able to get a measurement off from my Sons they are funny about things like that on shop time where i work and i am on 1st and the kid is on 3rd i need to leave now so i will look into it

Tedsters: even a quick tape measure across on width and depth without taking the vise off the swivel might help Verg know if a 1780 or C2 swivel might work for the one he is missing on his C3. if not i'll get him mine when i'm back in town. sounds like Verg might have his own 1780 to measure soon so either way he should figure it out soon.

have a great day

I have the 1765 and it's one hell of a nice vise. While it's not the "C" series, it's more than enough and both are made of 60,000 psi Ductile Iron (not 30,000 psi Cast Iron). I really enjoy the precision of it more than anything else.

Very nice score for a meager $200

tedsters,

I hopefully will be picking up a 1780 to tomorrow as long as it passes my inspection. The pictures are not as nice as the ones you shared, but the price is most definitely right. Thank you very much for you offer to help out with measurements.

Thanks,
Verg

Drop her off at a shoe store and tell her you're "just running out to grab her a latte". She'll never know you were gone. :lol_hitti
