Hello Wilton experts - I recently received this Wilton 1780 marked vise. Attached are a few pictures. I do not know anything about these vises. I know its about 110 pounds, 8 inch wide jaw and opens to 8 inches. I pulled the side - two pics attached -- i can not definitely determine date. I was looking to see what nominal value of this vise is a do not want or have use for. I appreciate any info to help me figure out what I have.

Welcome to GJ. That's in pretty good shape. As far as value, the date doesn't make a difference. Price is mostly going to be determined by your area. In my neck of the woods, I'd say that would sell pretty easily in the $200 range. If you're local to me, I'll come right over with cash!

Haha... we all have more one or two or lets not say. I'll ship it. I know it was rebuilt and painted -- it was rusty from what previous owner told me. I bought to use for welding table --- too big for what i need. I bought a new 1755 which is perfect.

THAT is a big boy. Take a look at ebay prices for the 1780 vises. There are five on ebay right now: $1,330.00....... $1,150.00....... $1,757.99....... $1,594.54....... and $2.257.99.

The $1,150. vise offers $157 shipping.
The $1,594.54 vise is $30 shipping.
The other three offer free shipping.

If you ship it build a crate for it. I use 2X2 with one corner chamfered down on each of the 2X2 so the crate is smaller. (hope that makes sense--the chamfered corner faces inward) Then I screw and glue 3/8ths plywood to the frame pieces. I don't glue the top on, but just screw it on and mark it well that it is not glued so the buyer can get in easily. Its not going to be a huge package, and FedEx rates are dependent on the size of the package as well as the weight.

Zoro is selling them for $1330 with free shipping

But that is for a NEW vise.
The vise the OP is talking about is 5 years old which to most of us doesn’t matter at all but selling prices for lots of stuff is way higher if it is brand new vs. second hand.

If a company needs to buy a vise for their shop, they are probably not gonna scan C/L for a used vise no matter how good the condition is.

Have to keep in mind that the current Tradesman are made in Taiwan where as the one above would be one of the last of the USA models. Some buyers don't care, but it would certainly make a difference in price to me.

Thanks for the responses --- i just want to make $700 on it for what i paid for. Its too big for my project i needed it for. I bought a 1755 -- yeah Tawain but for my use case its fine for the garage. I'll probably list for $850 and offer free shipping -- i have a work fedex account and get massive discounts for personal uses. I ship UPS battery systems around the country all the time --- these weigh 110 pounds. I have lots of brown paper wrap and two types of bubble wrap --- try to double box it.

Im just glad it's actually 110 pounds. I've lifted a couple, turns out I'm stronger than I thought.

I like my 1780. I paid $300 a few years ago but it had broken jaws, so am all in about $400. I see them going anywhere from about 500 to 750 locally. One recently sold on eBay new open box for 750 with shipping. I had a chance to buy a C3 for 750 a while back, still kick myself about that one BUT at 204lbs the C3 really isn't manageable for a hobby shop. The 1780 is plenty capable and it is a lot easier to move around. I consider it to be similar to the 500 machinist, which is roughly the same weight. Of course there are strengths and weaknesses for both.

I know this is an old thread but I just had to point this out because everytime I come across your comment I can't help but cringe 😬: Really... $200? You sure about that? When Was the last time you found a Wilton 1780 made in use vise in this condition posted for $200? Yeah that's what I thought, and I don't doubt it for even a second that you would come right over, huffin and puffin with cash in hand! But the only reason you would do that is because you damn well know such a low ball offer would only benefit you, it's obvious that you are just trying to get yourself a amazing deal, rather than give an honest answer.. Haha 😂

I went back and read the original post. You are 100% correct. I did not remember that being the bigger 1780 version of that vise. 110lbs is quite a bit bigger than what I was thinking. I bought the 5.5” version for $120. My mistake, that is definitely worth more than $200.

Hey at least you acknowledged it, and that's worth something considering most people wouldn't be willing to do that especially when someone is ridiculing or calling them out, but if it's an honest mistake than I understand, and no hard feelings. But I admit that I could have worded that a lot better, and less confrontational. Less emojis too..

Another thing to consider that I'm not really sure many people are aware of, it's that Wilton tradesman vises are made entirely out of ductile iron, whereas the C1, C2, C3 are made entirely out of cast iron, and Machinist vises are also cast if I'm not mistaken. Also tradesman are also made in USA just as the combination vises, and Machinist vises (well they used to be but those are the ones I'm referring too)

Man, I know this is an old post but I just bought a tradesmen Wilton 1780 made in the USA baby! $100 I’m not even joking and I was gonna pass on it because the way the guy put it on Facebook, he just said “ 8 inch vise” like literally he didn’t know what he had and I told him I was interested and I didn’t even know what kind of vise it was! I showed up about a half hour later and he said specifically it’s not a Wilton because it doesn’t have the logo on the side! But little did, he knew that these vices had a sticker nameplate and not an imprinted name like the old ones! I did my research before I went to meet up with them because I did see the 1780 number, and I said this could be a Wilton vise! So I literally said well it’s made in the USA. It could be a knock off or something, but when I went home with confidence and looked up the serial number, etc. I was blown away! And yes, early bird gets the warm because it was only on the marketplace for literally less than an hour! And yes, I am still pinching myself because I can’t believe a diamond in a rough was dropped right on my freaking lap! 110 pounds that is! 😎
