I have been sending e-mail to a guy who had a vise post made of a truck wheel with post and it had an old vise on it. Well the vise looked like a wilton so I sent him a request as to what the vise was and since it was broken how much was it.
He said the stand was sold and that the vise was broken but he went out and red what it was --- Wilton 450 with swivel base,

Time forward he sent me an e-mail yesterday saying if i didn't come for the vise this weekend he would have to start charging rent to keep it.

Today I took the drive 50 miles and got that old girl. She has lived all her life outdoors but appears to have little damage -- jaws perfect,
Here is the problem is missing the screw and handle, and the dynamic jaw is rusted in place. Hopefully I can get it loose with either electrolysis or soaking in molasses or Both.

Does anyone have a screw and handle for one of these bad boys?

(pictures to come latter tonight)

Gary

First, free it up. The handles off the 400 & 450 are the same except for the length. I probably have a spindle around here but I can't guarantee the condition of the handle itself. First things first, free it up and then contact me.

great Nick

how do you recommend removing the rust and freeing up the jaw?

thanks

gary

That...Some of the other members will have to tell you. I never had to free up a rusted channel bar before. Some get so badly rusted they become part of the housing. Maybe, thats why it was free.

well for the time being I am squirting PB blaster into the joint and
have driven a punch between the jaws to put a bit of pressure on the joint.

any better ideas

I have several vises that were completely rusted. I was able to free one using several extended stays in my electrolysis tank. The other was too large for the tank, so I used many many applications of PB blaster... spray, tap, let it sit for a few hours... lather rinse, repeat. It probably took 50 applications of PB over the course of a week, but it eventually came loose.

You could soak the whole thing in some kerosene and transmission fluid, but then you've got a couple gallons of waste to dispose of...

Thanksgiving surprise!

after spraying with pb blaster 2 or 3 times a day and beating with a 4 lb deadblow hammer it is finally beginning to come loose! Now I can move it about 1/2 inch with not too much force. more soaking and we will see what I can do Friday.

Well today the vise gave in and the dynamic jaw came out! it is really not too rusted inside. so I think it will rehab well.

Now I just need a handle, with main screw and retainer and I can get to work rehabbing the thing.

any body have one?

5th is the dynamic jaw and base and assorted parts removed

whops the last one is my roof this past monday. Was inside and heard something on roof, that is what I saw 12 turkey vultures walking around and stomping on the roof

If you can't find a replacement screw, find out what size acme screw it is a make a screw. Acme Screw stock is available, and you can make a simple head slug on a slip fit to the OD of the thread and weld it on.

Gary.....first off Congrats on getting the Wilton freed up!! 2 slices of vise pie for you tonight! That photo of the electro bath has to be one of the nastiest that I have seen so it means that it did its work.

Second.....autopts wants to know about those vultures since he might be able to train one to ****** up Wiltons.....well maybe the baby bullets. LOL

train those dang things. THEY SMELL TOO BAD! And they are protected (migratory birds) . After the roof incident I looked them up on the internet and if they choose to roost on your roof they will EAT the shingles.

Lucky for me they only come to my roof about once a year.

The jaws are the original ones. I am sure the vise was purchased put on stand, used a few times and then abandoned until it was rusted like I found it.

I removed the jaws , ran a wire wheel on them and saw that I couldn't fix them as I wanted so then soak in acetic acid for 4 or 5 hours. then clean with brush and apply boeshield t-9 and that is what I got. (look good don't they)

Well today I sold the 450 for $300 to a welding shop who needed that size vise much more than I did. They were replacing a wilton 1745 with my 450. The 1745 has a broken base and needs jaw inserts.

Anyway I wanted to replace the giant vise with one more my size. So I went to sears and bought their "professional vise" which is a wilton 1745 clone and it seems to fit my work bench much better

gary

(wonder if I should make an offer for their 1745)
