I just picked up this Wilton bullet vise over the weekend, and it is a brute! It has 6" wide jaws and easily weighs over 125 lbs. It is missing one jaw, the dust cap, the collar, and the swivel base. The only part that I would have difficulty fabricating is the swivel base. Does Autopots still have them for sale? Does anyone else?

She isn't pretty right now, but she will be. It'll clean up nicely once I'm done restoring it.

You should consider if you need a swivel base at all. A lot of guys I've seen on the interwebz w/ proper fab shop mount their large vises fixed and 600 is beyond large - monster.

Anyone know when wilton changed the 600 from a one piece cast dynamic jaw to a two piece with steel slide?

The swivel bases are pretty fragile. Unfortunately for a fixed base the wilton's only have two tie down points. Really wish they had at least one additional in the back.

600 isn't that big, now the 800 is monster territory.

Depending on what you are doing, I'd just use some flat aluminum bar stock for jaws.

I was at Nick's house yesterday and he sure has alot of Wilton parts laying around in his garage. I wouldn't be surprised if he had the base you're looking for.

Great! I'll find him here and PM him. The jaws I can fabricate from A2 tool steel, and I'll use a freeze plug for a dust cap. Napa has them in stock for $1.99. Making the collar should be easy on my lathe.

I have a smaller bullet, and I've actually used the swivel maybe once or twice since I acquired it 5-6 years ago. I agree that is isn't a necessity.

I was thinking the same thing about the two bolt holes mounting it to the bench. But, the same two bolt holes hold it to the swivel base? Or is there a big one in the center? Im not familiar with the wilton swivel bases.

There is just an alignment pin in the center for rotation, at least on the more modern ones. After using a 800s pretty heavily. I think the standard bullet design is really best suited to the more precision 3-4" size. While they scaled pretty well, the design would fare better with a 4 or at least 3 bolt hole pattern for the fixed base setup in the larger vises. As with the 2 inline bolt downs, you an up with a pretty good fulcrum.

I have the same vise and use it a lot. I have the swivel but don't use it as it is mounted on a mobile stand.

No matter what condition you get a bullet vice in they can be brought back to life, any condition is better than none.
