I just happen to be in the market for a new bench vise and while perusing the Wilton website I came across Special Edition Tradesman and Mechanics Vises in black to celebrate their 75th Anniversary. Not only that, but the Tradesman vise (1755 with 5-1/2” jaw width) has a 2016 Promo MSRP of only $399 and includes a 4lb B.A.S.H. sledge hammer!

As far as I can find, this is cheaper than the standard Wilton 1755 and sounds like a pretty good deal. I couldn't find much information anywhere else on it and since 2016 is their anniversary year I'm guessing these haven't been out very long.

Thoughts?

P.S. Before anyone mentions it, I am also looking into finding a quality used vice but haven't had much luck yet. Hoping to do better at some garage sales and auctions this spring.

I can't add anything by the way of intelligent information, but I can say you may have just cost me a fair chunk of change. Now if they ship to Canada...

It shows a bullet style vise in your linked photo, but in this page's photo, it shows a different style of vise.

I noticed that too at first. It appears they copied the picture from the imported Mechanics Vise Page to the Tradesman vise even though their promotional page shows the correct picture.

They also have a Promotional Flyer with the correct picture and pricing information. http://content.jettools.com/content/Wilton-75th-Anniversary-Promo-End-User-Flyer.pdf

it's a pretty decent deal, however the only retailer they linked from the website is selling it for $429 with free shipping, hopefully we will see it at MSRP or less soon.

The same hammer is selling for $50 on amazon, so you are in effect getting the vise at $350 and can't be beat.
The Wilton bash hammers are made in Mexico and the rubber encapsulating the handle smells funky. But that hammer weight and length is actually quite useful (for working on cars) so don't pawn it off yet. I don't think I would use a 4lb hammer on that vise when I paid MSRP for it.

Anyone order from them before, price is great

A quick search of GJ turns up nothing good... Looks like they are a poor service drop shipper. The posts are pretty old though so maybe they turned things around? I think the most recent I saw was 2012ish.

Funny, I originally ordered that one before I found the other site. I asked the Amazon seller if he could price match the 35 dollar difference and he just refunded me instead.

Nice vise purchase, so you didn't purchase from the coastal tool then?

Yeah, I ordered from coastal. Started to from Amazon before I found them. The Amazon guy wouldn't price match and canceled my order instead. Worked out good though.

how's the quality on the Chinese mechanics? thinking about getting one since I don't really have any need for heavy use, I will use to do my mountain bike maintenance, mostly suspension. would like a good quality, but hard to justify $399 for the tradesman

Thanks PoorOwner, the work bench has been a project I kept putting off for years. The bench is a Craftsman heavy duty and I used the wall control pegboard and light kit. The only issue I am having is getting ahold of an 11/16 drill bit/hole saw, None of the local stores carried that size (guess its an odd ball). I did order the correct size hole saw from Amazon and now its a waiting game. I think with cutting oil this may be the best route to cut through the stainless. I will be sure to update with the finished product.

I couldn't tell you about the mechanics version as I only ordered the tradesman, but I paid 335 with an added 8 dollars to ship. On Amazon the hammer sells for about 55 bucks alone. This comes out to roughly 288 for the vise, I thought it sounded like a very good deal as the normal 1755 sell for about 400. Personally, I have always been in the buy once cry once mentality. Hope you find the right deal for you, good luck with your purchase.

11/16 hole saw will work great. Just make sure you put lots of lube so the stainless does not overheat or grab the bit. The substrate is probably particle board

If you can do a precise drilling job you can get away drilling 5/8 holes and file it slightly larger. I never use the template they include. I put some tape over a 5/8 spade or auger bit and hit with a hammer to get the pilot hole based on the actual vise base.

Thanks for the heads up. Why the tape?

Ok guys: update, installed it and I am pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the help. The only word of caution I can suggest is to take the base plate off and make sure you have the front pointed forward, don't ask me how I found out, lol. Use the proper hole saw and cutting oil in the actual base plate holes to start your pilot holes. After that you don't have to worry about measuring and remeasuring.

sweet! nice bench!

question: what are those screwdrivers holder?

Thanks! Those are screw driver holders from wall control, the main issue I found with them is they don't fit the larger drivers.

Ok guys, should I put an 8" Baldor bench grinder on the other side or something else? If so, what model?
