Wilton 835 Restoration

Here's a video demonstrating the play and jaw alignment.

I recently restored a similar Wilton. I was able to remove the keyway, then sandwich a brass shim between the keyway and slide to snug it up.

It is...sort of. It's a really hard color to match. The paint shop guys (all three) spent literally 45 minutes trying to match it. It's got enough blue and green in it to really be a challenge.

In the end I went with "close enough" and had them make a couple of cans for me

In the case of this old beater, I'm just going to find something close and go with it.

For future reference, it looks like this freeze plug could be made to work.

I picked up this freeze plug this afternoon and was disappointed to find that it has a large dimple in the middle. None of the pictures of this PN online show this dimple. Oh well. I figures it's better than nothing for this particular vise. I had to chuck it up in my lathe and take .010"-.015" off the OD. I then had to take about 0.250" off the length. It's a nice fit now.

A minute with a 120 grit flap disc on a grinder would likely remove the dimple and the machining marks. I've done the same on some that were much worse and you'd never know it after they're done.

This is true. So to the OP ive got one galvanized endcap still here i can send you for free. Weve switched to stainless steel so ive got one galvanized one left. All i ask for is a photo after install that i can use to promote sales to others in the future

I REALLY appreciate that. However, I'm not too worried about this old beater. It is what it is. Besides, it's already painted up and ready to go. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Heck that real good for a first. You gonna have a good future and good times restoring your next one. Get yourself some JB weld or Loctite putty or equivalent and start using it to fill in the dents and dings if you want on future restos.It works real well.

I know this is a year old, but I think it turned out great! Looks like no one answered you on fleabay pricing, but the 3.5" are listed at $250-$500 (asking). I didn't check the "sold" listings.

Apologies for bringing up an old thread, but I have come across a Wilton for sale locally with exactly the same problem as the OP’s: 9350 static jaw, and 835 dynamic. Seems like I’ve seen another vise or two in other threads that are the same way as well.

Does anyone have any further insight on this particular issue? How much would you say it devalues the vise? I would be curious to know how much blsnelling was able to sell his for.

Most people won't even realize that it's a Frankenstein vise. I see all kinds of abominations on Marketplace and they sell.

Best way to get an overall idea of what they sell for is to do a sold listings search on Ebay. This will put you in retail pricing territory.
