Wilton bullet id- pls help

Hey guys, looking for some info on this recent vise acquisition. Picked this up on the cheap, but its got some flaws.

(I searched for "ID" vise thread, read a lot, but never found a answer. Did I miss a vise id'ing thread?)

First, would you be kind enough to give me a guess at model/date. What I know:

4.5" wide vise
horizontal serrations on one jaw
stamped "JC" on static jaw
has swivel base/plate

The bad, its missing the horseshoe nut on the front and the jaws have been welded on.

Planning on a full restore, would like to order the horseshoe nut asap. I cant get the moving jaw out... suggestions? Thanks!

Tarbell: take a look at maybe yesterday's or the day before's postings of KMScott cutting out some jaws off an old vise.

your removable jaws are welded on and since i don't own a CNC or mill i can't tell you how i'd remove them. if you can get the old jaws off and then re tap or use the old holes all you'll need to do it make or order a new set of jaws from KMScott and you'll have a keeper vise.

Thanks drive- The welds on the jaws dont look to deep, I plan on removing them. I have spoken to KMScott about vise jaws before, he is a great resource, just wish I still lived in CO.

As for the type of vise, is there anything you can tell me about the ID?

pull out the dynamic slide and wipe off the key way real good and you might find a date on it. sometimes you can only see with a camera and flash if the vise was used a lot say at a school, but your vise is old enough that it might have been government issue during WWII between 1941-1945.

what did you want to know about it other than it's age?

I would pull the slide, but its stuck till I get it dipped.

Just cant seem to narrow down which vise I have, I know its a older Wilton bullet type. But other then that I dont know how to order parts for it.

Ie What model parts would I order from KMScott?

i'm pretty sure KM will know what jaws you need if you tell him an old 40's Chicago stamped 4.5 inch jaw wilton. send him an email or PM or he might see your thread and post. of course it might depend what you find under the welds so i'd get the old jaws off first and then email him pictures of your vise with measurements.

good luck and post the date on the slide once you get it apart on the Wilton date stamp thread you already visited if you would.

It looks like the welds stick out further than the jaws? I wonder if it was ever used after the jaws were welded on... Like someone started working on it, then gave up?
