I just acquired a damaged 9300 from ebay. The end cap and spindle are damaged. I have seen pics of this section removed from this particular model. I would like to replace the damaged pieces and make this vise whole again. What models will these parts interchange with? I refuse to let it die.

Was that damage shown in the listing? Was it mentioned at all? It seems to me that the seller is responsible for disclosing such significant damage. You might consider contacting the seller (file a claim if necessary) saying you want to return the item because it is not as advertised. Paypal gives you "insurance" on this sort of thing.

It was listed. I just wanted a project.

Yeah...After I posted, I searched eBay for recent sales and found your vice. Good? price but I don't know what shipping cost. With the damage, the price might not qualify as good.
I have a Chicago era 3 inch bullet with no swivel base that I bought for $100. It had no damage except for the fact that the end cap was missing.
Those screws holding on the jaws will be a challenge to remove. Mine were in the same condition. I got them out eventually.

I could not find this model on that site.

I doubt that anybody is stocking replacement tailpieces for those oldies. You'll have to find a damaged parts vise to cannibalize. Parts vises do come up once in a while. Another member, CRSINMICH, had a parts vise but it was 4 inch.

Dang. I am still hoping to find a used one. I figure if I look long enough one will turn up.

Hint: There are plenty of good sweat equity tool projects out there but vises are not one of them.

There a gazillion different models which makes the parts hunt very difficult. And even if you find an organ donor the shipping costs will be prohibitive.

I'd suggest you only buy complete undamaged vises that need cleanup.

Measure your spindle. I happen to have a spare. I 'might' have the other part. I bought 35 of those at auction one time. A couple had issues that made them parts vises.

Did you really buy 35 three inch bullets! Wow!
Do you have any extra swivel bases for my Chicago era 3HD bullet or my Schiller Park 500S?

I am stoked. There will be lots of photos of both of my bullets including teardowns, cleaning and painting.

I think this one just wants to be whole again. I am already picking out a color for it. Hammered copper looks pretty good.

The spindle from a Tradesman 1740 or 1745 would work. That end cap should be no big deal. Sometimes you have to "Let Go" Looking at the back, if the rest of that vise is really beat, I would draw a line in the sand with the Max $ I would invest in it. If you have the swivel base, you could always sell that off.

I appreciate the info. I have a figure in mind. I just hate to see old tools die. I can sit this one back and slowly find parts. This old vise will never be new again, but it can be whole. Besides, this is cheaper than therapy.

Yep. It was times the money auction and everyone else dropped out at $17 thinking they would get one on the next round. I took them all. My old pickup was sitting low after I loaded them all. There were some PO'd people. I think it was the Carrolton ISD when they closed their shops best I remember. They sold real well on eBay. I have one spindle for sure, maybe one front jaw. I'm not sure about the nut. I wish I had a swivel base. None of these had one. My 4" bullet has a broken one now. I need the measurement because I'm not positive they were 3", almost positive but it was 20 years ago.

M.O.T.:
Great story! Thanks for sharing it with us.

You might have better luck looking for a complete 3 inch bullet that has a cracked jaw tower. That kills the resale value so you can buy it cheap. Grab the tail piece and end cap, then sell off the nut, spindle, front horse shoe washer or collar, and maybe the jaws to recoup part of your investment.

Oh I have been on the lookout. I am going to focus on the 8400 first and look for the parts for this one when I can.

The nut is completely useable. As long as it comes out pretty easy. I have started breaking it down for cleaning. The spindle retainer is worn pretty bad and another will have to be located. I really want to avoid new parts since this will be used a lot.

I got the tailpiece off. This is a good one to practice on. I figure I will clean it up and get it whole again. The plan is to put linseed oil on it and give it to a friend. It came apart easy. They really built these to last.

There is a broken screw in the dynamic jaw. I looked at it for a moment and realized it would be pretty easy to get at if I had a vise to hold it.

Did you ever get a chance to check on that spindle? Should I look for a matching dynamic jaw?

I haven't made it over to old shop yet. I've been busy building a Steevo bench. I'll probably get by there this week. I had dynamic jaws that didn't align when put in a different vise. I would stick with the one it was born with unless it's broken.

Thanks. No rush on the spindle. Both halves look to have the same finish. Did some come with mismatched numbers? The mate up perfectly. Is there any chance you might have a tailpiece?
