Wilton C1 Bullet Vise Question

I have a Wilton C1 Bullet Combo Pipe and Bench vise (date stamp = July 1981) that weighs in at a hefty 75 lbs. It has been on my "restore list" for some time. As you can see from the pictures, the bottom of the stationary jaw has a large chunk out of it. This only affects the last 1" of the slide; otherwise it has all the other parts and works perfectly. Everything about it says “restore me”. Yes, GJ has affected my vise collecting/restoring hobby! I thought there may be a member who has a lonely solid Wilton C1 stationary jaw out there. I would be happy to purchase or trade to convert this C1 into its former glory. At least we can make one good C1 Wilton vise out of two partial ones. If any of the GJ members have other thoughts, please let me know.

If you look at the opposite side from where that piece is missing, it looks like there is a crack there also. How does someone manage to damage a vise in such an unusual area?

Using it as a press, by cranking down hard on the handle with the jaw all the way out.

There is a crack on the other bottom side too, which is angled back into the adjoining crack. My guess is that a previous owner used the vise as an anvil while the dynamic jaw was fully extended.

This is also my guess. I've seen plenty of vises which have met the same fate.

Combo vises are more fragile than non combo vises as the extra height of the jaw towers induces quite a bit more stress into the reaction points. On wilton bullet style vises, the further out the dynamic jaw is, the more stress is induced to the static jaw casting as support changes as a function of the opening. Unlike a square slide style vise where the reaction support remains constant for the entire opening of the vise.

What does the top side, end of the dynamic slide look like?

I expected damage there too, but the top if the dynamic jaw is still in good shape.
