I recently picked up a wilton 1780 in very nice condition for a great price. The problem is I already have a C2 that I have mounted to the bench and I only have room for one big vise. The C2 is in good condition but not near as nice as the 1780. They both seem comparable in weight but obviously the 1780 has much wider jaws. So now I am thinking about swaping. I know this is really personal preference but which would you choose as your main vise between these two wiltons? This is for home duty by the way... Go ahead and state any pros and cons you see.

In the end I will probably end up keeping both though...if I can.

thanks!

Here are a couple pics of the 1780. It really is a big vise!

Do you think there is any difference in quality? I will try and post a side by side shot later.

Hands down! Keep the C-2 and flip the 1780A!

thanks for the suggestion Autopts. Would you paint this vise before you sell it. As you can see it has no damage and perfect jaws...just a little surface rust where the paint has flaked off.

What would be a good price to ask? Maybe with my profits I can buy new jaws for my C2!

Humm, I don't know if I would repaint it. I would go over it with a fine brass wire wheel just to get the grime off, and the anvil clean. I would also take all 4 jaws off, inspect them and clean them and clean up that handle. New ones on Ebay are going for around $375. I would guess maybe $150-$200depending on how nice it comes out.

Build a vise stand out of a old truck rim, a tractor wheel center, etc., and a joint of four inch pipe. Mount the new vise to the stand, then you'll have one for when you are working at the bench and one you can move around to wherever you need it.

C-2 is a better vise for sure. The jaws are steel rather than powdered metal as are the pipe jaws. Much more mass behind the jaw inserts on the C-2.
