I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to vises which is why I haven't picked up a used one yet. It's obviously missing the jaws but how can you tell that it's not going to close just based on the picture?

Look at the taper on the slide where it's been welded & then ground down. The piece is supposed to be straight, not shaped like a funnel ;)

don't forget, welding cast iron requires some wicked skills and proper pre and post heat treatment to get the parts to the original strength. I highly doubt it will hold under pressure.

And that is why I call such "members" spammers. If the only reason you join a forum is to sell your stuff - worthless in this case - you are basically considering GJ as an extension/alternate to craigslist and other such services and are ought to be banished...

Maybe there should be something like a 25 post min./30 day membership requirement before being able to post in the classifieds.

This is a good idea. It also gives people a chance to get to know a new member a little better, before buying something from them.

He probably opened up the dynamic jaw past the point of thread contact and it fell on the concrete floor.

It also looks like the rear dowel pins are missing.

25 posts wouldn't prove anything. Just means he posts 25 useless posts in one night.

Actually this post serves a greater good. Look how much we've (well OK, me, a novice wannabe vise owner) has learned.

This seller also spams cl too much. He has distinctive ads with his ph # always in green.

+1,000...

I really don't understand the opposition to a minimum post count before allowing someone to start selling their stuff...

A lot of folks don't want to take part in useless "country of origin" or "imperfect chrome" discussions.

At least once a week I find someone who has been having a hard time selling high quality tools and I always reccomend that they put it in the classifieds here.

Yes, but it would prevent the spammers from dropping their Ebay and CL **** into our forums with their very first post.

It wouldn't be a perfect solution but a few simple hurdles might be enough to keep idiots like this away.

However I haven't seen much of this so don't know if anything really needs to be fixed.

Come on guys if the guy had a mint vise for $30 you would not care if he had no previous posts. You have to make your own judgment whether it is worth the risk.

A minimum post count before a user can start new threads in the classified section or send/recieve private messages is a proven method of keeping most spammers out of the message boards. Usually its either 5 or 25 from what I've seen. Some times its 5 posts to start a new threat and 25 to send PMs.

As has been stated previously, it doesn't seem to be too big of a problem here so why impliment something like that just to keep a few people out when it kills it for some honest people who may just want to sell a few tools ? Its a solution that should be used when there is a real problem.

I am a noob here, and I agree with the post minimim before selling. It'd be like Ebad feedback. I only need 23 more.

5 or 10 posts, that pass some level of topic and forum moderation, are common requirements in other forums before posting images and links.

OTOH what fun it is to shred a bad ad or posting.

It probably was a factory defect, or, it was hit suddenly by maybe a fork lift runing by it. It wasn't used long judging the body is nice yet.
Guys, Don't be too quick to judge. We look at vises 24/7 and can instantly spot a flaw. This member could be very old and as much as you think someting as obvious as that braze, should not have gone unnoticed, it could have. I see broken Wiltons all the time on Ebay. To some sellers its just another tool and for them, if the jaws go back and forth, It works! For all I know, maybe his punk grandson listed it and doesn't give a ****. I find it strange that he only has 4 posts total and they are all in the classifieds. He could be taking a dirt nap for all we know.
