I have a chance to score this vise for $75.00. It's an 8". I heard some wiltons were made in china, how can you tell. The sticker as oppossed to cast id markings has me wondering. The only other thing that has me hesitating is I have a very small garage with a small bench so would really benefit from a swivel vise. I could make do with this until I win the lottery and get my bigger shop where I could mount it with lots of space around it.

I just bought a Wilton Tradesman 6" for 100 bucks, it weighs 70 pounds. It goes for 450 on amazon right now.

It says on the side "Made in the USA." I don't think the mechanics vise like the one pictured is made in the US. Only the tradesman and up are made here.

I've got two simple rules for buying tools:

1) Don't buy a vise that doesn't have the maker's mark and COO cast into it.
2) If it doesn't have Made in USA cast/forged into it, it wasn't made in USA.

That is worth $75. It IS USA made. It is not wiltons best vixe, but not junk either. I would not pay any more than that for it. Price is about right.

Thanks for the input everyone. I have a fake Record 6" swivel now but I always wished I had 8" (isn't that the way it always is).

I have to keep my roller cabinet right beside my small work bench where the vise mounts. With something large in the vise I've often had to swivel it just to open the drawers in the roller cab. I find I use the swivel feature of a vise a lot so I'm going to hold off on buying this one, maybe they'll come down.

We have the 8" swivel version of that vise at work($299 new). They aren't even close the same quality/heft/smoothness of nicer vises. Most of the old 4" beater vises have larger bodies than that style 8" wilton.

That vise appears to be missing the swivel base. I have the same vice that I bought from a member here for $100. What a big mistake. After a call to Wilton, I was told if it was not stamped Made In US, it is an import model. Mine is imported, after I was told by the seller that it was not.

I would agree that this vise is an import. We had a couple of them at my workplace and one of the weakest points is the anvil plate behind the rear jaw. They have sometimes have air pockets in them causing them to shatter. With the swivel plate missing this vise is very limited. Sorry.
