Picked up this wilton today it has 5" jaws it is marked 10-46 my question is regarding the main screw and the retainer. There is some play in the retainer and where it rides on the main screw is this normal? Do I have the wrong retainer? The pictures show the amount of play..

Well, considering it's about 70 years old, probably just wear, probably didn't see a lot of lube in its life. If you have metal fab skills, you could make a thicker retainer to take up the slop..

Pull the retainer and measure the groove width and retainer thickness. You can build up the groove with weld then re-machine back down to a narrower groove. And or make a thicker retainer plate. What you are seeing is the backlash.
