First thing i'd do is unscrew out the dynamic jaw all the way, don't let it drop, and turn it over and wipe off the slide to see the date. it should have a makers date, or Exp with a date that is 5 years after vise made or some of the early ones didn't have one.

my guess and i'm always to be corrected if somebody knows better is the late 40's maybe early 50's with that jaw style. nice vise by the way and the jaws look perfect on them. any damage you can see or know of? pulling it apart should let you know more information on condition by looking around with a bright flashlight.

nice find and mind sharing the price you paid? also are the jaws 4.5 inches across the top or maybe 5 inches?

Orchidlane,

Great find! And welcome to GJ. I too am in chandler, let me know which swap meet you found it at? I'd like to find one of those myself.

The swivel jaw is supposed to have a pin not a whacking huge nut and bolt in it...

The Model number should be a 350SJ, if it's got 3 1/2" wide jaws...

I've enclosed two photos of a 450SJ restored by "Maclin", and a photo of another swivel jaw...

Notice the pin...

Brother Scott (KNScott on the forum) may be able to make another pin for you, I don't know what the cost would be...

The 450SJ brought over $ 600.00 on Ebay...that is a valuable vise you have there...it's worth restoring, properly...

All, thanks for all the nice postings, I paid 65.00 for the vise and I will just leave it like it is, looking at the other members photos and the vise I have the nut looks like its in a different location, dont know much about the early years but looks like the nut is factory correct to the year of the vise.

Yes you are correct on the factory correct nut and it is in the correct location. I added a link below to a older post showing a vise like yours taken apart. The nut was used to pull up the taper pin. You are very lucky to pick up that vise for $65. In the vise forum you would be issued a You **** Award which is a good thing.

orchidlane, it sounds like you know a thing or two about vises so were you able to pull out the dynamic slide and see a date? any cracks or missing parts that you can see? have you pulled the bolt out of the swivel to see it the jaw comes off or has the swivel ability. it's hard to give a value without the facts, but I've got at least a Benjamin ready to Paypal you for it so your wife shouldn't be too upset. need to also know if the swivel base is working like it should once you unbolt it.

any chance you can take it apart and give us some more Vise ****?????

take care

You could sell this vise right now, today, on this site at $130 and double your money. On a good day at auction on Ebay, it could go for 3 X $65 possibly or more restored.

Actually that date stamp has a very faint 6 meaning its actually 1 69 or January 1969 making it 45 years old this month. It looks to be in nice shape and still has the finger savers. Swivel jaw bullets are uncommon, I can see $200 plus for that on Ebay.
