Hello everyone, I came across a Wilton vise that was thrown in a scrap bin, I couldn't believe it when I see it in there. So I dug it out and found that the vise is complete but they broke the movable jaw side of the vise. I attached pictures so you can see the damage. I was wondering if anyone knows of where I can get a new/used casting? I've been looking around on the internet and haven't been able to find anything. Was hoping some of the Wilton guru's on here might have some helpful ideas!?

Thanks,
Matt

Alternatively look for parts vise or movable jaw. I think I saw them on e-bay before. Check if anybody has a broken one in vise parts thread

Might as well try to weld it. Both parts are scrap at this point anyways, might be able to get a decent weld on it to make it work

I thought about trying to weld it but I save that for my last resort. I will do some more looking.

As far as I know this is a Wilton C1 built in 1967, is there anything else I should know when buying parts for it?

Thanks

The jaws are not directly interchangeable. There will be slight differences in the alignment when you install a replacement jaw, so be prepared to do alot of grinding to the jaws to smooth them out. Ideally you will have access to a mill to square up the jaw seats. Keep in mind that you could sell the good parts for pretty good $$$

That's the weak point on those vises. I know of another broken in exactly that fashion. So there will be more demand for moveable jaws than there will be supply.

I have a dynamic jaw for a Wilton C1. I bought it about 2 years ago and never needed to use it. It has a production date of Feb. '78 and uses a single pin to hold the pipe jaw. I paid $50.00 for it and will sell it for $50.00 plus the actual shipping cost to send it to you if you are interested. I took some pictures to show the condition of the piece. Contact me with a PM if you are interested.

Thanks for the post. I know I might sound picky but I'd like to find a dynamic jaw that is the correct year/style for my vise if I can. My vise has 2 pins that hold the pipe jaw in. I'll keep ya in mind if I cant come up with something else.

Thanks

I can't see the ID of the parts but if they are machined on the ID of the broken part then the most reliable repair is going to be bronze-brazing imo. Machine a pin from something like aluminum to keep it aligned/concentric so the crack can be veed out as the bronze doesn't wick like soft-solder.

Big preheat on something like a propane grill to get the bulk temp up to 500 or 600F which will help reduce stress and use less oxyacet fuel gases. Use flux coated bronze rods and start wetting and filling as you go around. Back on the grill and ramp it down slowly in steps.

Find a local welding shop that has the tools and experience to tig braze with silicon bronze. If they have an oven to bring the parts up to 450 degrees F they can then get it welded, and back into an oven for a real slow cool down. The silicon bronze has a tensile strength of 50,000 psi and is machinable. You could end up with a functional original vise.
