Wilton vise question

I have a 1755 with swivel base.
Why the strange mounting base hole pattern?
What is the front of the pattern. About to mount the vise to a steel plate and curious what part to put up front.

The narrower spacing mounts to the rear, that way you get closest to the edge of the bench in front to allow long stock to be held vertically without hitting the bench top. The green line shows that the base can get closer to the edge of the bench and still have material to bolt the feet down than the side with the red line can.

Here is the mount i am working on.Also, I am adding a second receiver mount to the right of the bench in picture. That is why the leg is off the bench
