Pick your selling venue:

$400-500 shipped on Ebay
$200-250 on Craigs List
$75-100 at a Garage Sale
$25 at a Pawn shop

I would personally pay up to $150 or so, unless I really needed it, then I could be talked into $200.

eBay it. Start at a dollar no reserve and let her fly. Easiest and quickest and way to get top dollar. Only bad part is packing it up for shipping. I like to use milk crates for heavy stuff. Spray foam is great for securing awkward stuff. Wrap it in a thick plastic bag or else the buyer is going to be very unhappy.

Hi,
That will never go for $25 at any Pawn Shop I go to!

I use one just like it on the job everyday.

Although I try to respect it, it takes a little bit of a beating now and then, and never has a problem!

I have a 6" Starret/Athol Vise, at home!

Now we talking $$$!

That's an early one, probably about 1945-1948. Pull the dynamic jaw out all the way and look at the key for numbers stamped on the key, that should be the date code. Post up what you find here.

I bought a slightly better looking early 5" Wilton bullet from and antique shop and sold it at an auto swap meet for $350 after putting a $400 price tag on it.

Were that vise local I would pay up to $150 for it after inspection with full intent of selling it for $300.

I'm stumped here: how could a Wilton No. 4 have 5-inch jaws?

There is a little No 4 on the base of the static jaw, I have an identical one, 5" early Wilton with No 4 markings on the base. Wilton markings are weird in the early days!

Ok, so I'm guessing it's a casting code. I thought it was the actual words "No. 4" like the earliest Wiltons.

5" jaws are not all that common. I see 3 and 4 inch jaws much more often.

Condition of yours is decent but not great. If it functions smoothly, I would think $300 is obtainable if you have time. If you want a quick flip take less.

How are you going to market it, CL, ebay, flea market,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,?

It is def a no 4. Not the huge thing on the side, but cast in it in small letters. Those who said it might be early are probably right. I will pull the jaw and look for castings when i have a chance. It does function smoothly, I was impressed with it actually. Haven't bolted it down and actually used it, but seems pretty quality.

I was thinking craigslist, but not 100%

Am I better off leaving it as is, or taking the time to clean it up and then sell? Do you think it is worth it, or let the next guy do it? If so, how much/how should I clean it up?

That vise is in decent condition, so I think you'll get more money, and sell it quicker, if you clean it up. I'd strip the paint, polish all the bare metal parts, then fresh paint and list it.

This is one I just did the same thing to....it was nice to start with, but looks great now (my opinion, anyway!). I'm pretty sure I know which one will sell faster, and it wasn't a huge amount of time spent.

Be extremely wary of 'worth' given here. For every guy that says it's worth 350 bucks, there's a guy who paid 15 bucks for one.
Wiltons have hollow jaws.
Anything over the price of any other used vice is pure romance.

For fun, type:

Count the percent of wilton bullet versus others.

Am I the only one that came here to see if ducksface commented? I'm pretty sure he must have email alerts set for "Wilton value". :lol_hitti

Venture: Joe Striper and Bagged buy and sell vises in your area and come up with some great deals before they shine them up and usually sell on the Bay. that said if you don't have a good account with lots of positive comments on the Bay it might not sell for a good price. not all Wilton bullets get bid up on the Bay just so you know and there is a cost for using their service.

since you have a fairly rare Wilton bullet because of age and the 5 inch jaws i'd spiff it up like GMan did his smaller one and either keep it and use it or put it out there on CL or maybe another local place to get some eyes on it because it's a keeper.

SS: isn't that so true. maybe he doesn't realize that Wilton has a cheap low quality line of vises too and compares those to the bullet line. the bullet line isn't my FAVORITE model or brand of vise, but if you want a good vise to use in your shop that will last you a lifetime if you don't use a BFH or use is as a press it's a keeper. or maybe he wants to get his 2 cents in and hope SOMEBODY cares what he has to say. :)

I just did that....didn't see many broken bullets. There were quite a few that had been torn down prior to a restoration, but actual damaged examples weren't plentiful.

Varies by location but that's about $250-300 as it sits and with your description.

G-Man, what paint did you use on that restore? Looks great! I happen to have a 5" Wilton I need to get working on soon myself.

Thanks!

I used Rust-Oleum self-etching primer and then Rust-Oleum Hammered Verde Green. On a previous Wilton restoration I found one spot under the spindle that looked factory fresh, and sprayed some of the Verde Green alongside, and I simply couldn't tell the difference. If there's a difference from the factory color, I can't tell....close enough for me!

I'm guessing the Wilton salesman banged his wife because he seems to have seem real bad feelings about their vises. Me? I'd love to have that Wilton. :)

That vise won't yield a high payback if is sold as is. it has the old 5"W X 3/4"H jaws that should be replaced and it shows wear on top. Go on Ebay and check "Wilton vises" in "completed listings. You might be surprised at what Wilton's are exactly selling for and those guys ere asking a fortune, their vises have been sitting for months. Prices are falling, no doubt.

I did the same thing...didn't see all that many. We probably have a dozen bullets at work, I'd love to have one at home.

And for the bullets that were broke in my Google search, what the hell were they doing to break them?

Ebay "completed" listings will include the overpriced vises that have been sitting for months. He needs to check the box that say's "sold" listings to get an accurate picture of actual Ebay market prices.

However Ebay prices are meaningless if he intends to sell on CL.
