I would start at $50 and see what is said. More likely will need to pay $100. I have seen them go for $150 at sales but that is not the norm

$100 per inch of jaw width for swivel or $75 for fixed is approx. market price. + or -

What's the seller asking? If he's asking for offers start low. The vise won't last long if he's at a "you ****" price.

It's a 4" fixed base, he's asking $225 and he'll take $155 for the vise.....I don't think I'd go over $125.

Pay the $155 or bargain him down to $150 as it's worth it if jaws in good shape.

Maybe if he won't budge on the $155 , , , then ask him to "sweeten the pot" and throw in some other tool.

If Wiltons don't ever show up in your area, don't let that one slip away !! ;)

Nowhere do Wiltons sell for higher prices than GJ and ebay.

Personally I wouldnt go over $50, rule of thumb in collector circles is not more than $0.50/lb weight for <100 lb vises, more for 100+ lbs and I've found many Wiltons for much less. Its difficult to judge without knowing the model as Wiltons varied quite a bit in casting thickness but I'd wager its 60-70 lbs.

His $155 price is fair. If the vise works for you and you want one soon then go get it.

You can find them cheaper but it might take months or years to get a "you ****" deal.

Impossible to say GJ vise mania is the cause of escalating prices, but they're higher than ever.

Keep in mind, even the high prices are a fraction of the current new prices.

It's worth its weight in

Weight.

Until you see it in person.
Wiltons crack, often.

Just about any week here someone finds one for under 20 bucks.
I've never paid more than 10 for any wilton until last month

My new to me wilton 600 was 40 bucks(and the 40 also covered a fair, 50lb chinese vise and a giant swivel base from an unknown vise) , and I'm not especially proud of giving 40 bucks, except it needed nothing but to wipe old grease off with a papertowel.

You pay what any vise is worth to you. The rest is payment for pretty.
Wiltons have hollow jaws. That one doesn't swivel. What's that worth without the pretty?

What planet are you from??? Sure you may get lucky and find a you **** deal but I have attended a lot of auctions for the last 8 years and wiltons rarely go cheap. And what is this Wilton's crack often? While any vise will break with abuse, I can't recall seeing any Wilton bullets cracked. And this is coming from a guy who routinely spends a grand a week at auctions for the last 8 years.

Maybe the smaller weaker Wilton vises, like the ones with exposed threads?? The biggest issue I've seen as a Wilton newb myself, is that if severely abused, the slide can bend and make the vise hard to operate, or stuck.

Duck, if you felt like $40 was too much for a 6" bullet, a China vise, plus a bonus swivel base, I don't know what to say to you. Even people who aren't vise nerds like us GJ folk know about Wilton vises. You could flip the 6" Wilton for double your money and the buyer would think they got a "You ****" price.

It's worth $150+ in any part of the country because that's what people are willing to pay. If the seller changes his ad to reduce the price from $225 to $150, it won't last a day.

Ducksface must be the luckiest man alive or lives in another dimension to have never paid more than $20 for a Wilton vise (sans the 600 for $40).

However, if anyone questions the "cracking" problem, look no further than the "Vises of GJ" thread. There are a great many Wiltons that have been broken shown there.

I paid $110 for my 4" wilton and the jaws are in really good condition. To me, it was well worth it.

Bullets don't break because of low quality they get broken because they are an awesome vise that gets purchased for the most abusive situations.

Don't mind Ducks, everything is 10 cent junk to him.

Scrap is scrap.
If you have a 20 dollar vise that is perfectly usable, there just isn't any reason to pay 150 for a used wilton.
Use your perfectly serviceable vise you have been using, and wait for a deal. One day, one year, tyree years, no difference, you have a servicable vise now.

Anvils?
Same thing.
1 person in 10,000 needs an anvil. 1 in 100,000 can use a good anvil to an extent a chunk of rail wouldn't work.
Buy a 30 dollar hf anvil. Wait for the deal you need on the cool kids anvil.

I don't sell things. I gift or trade them.
The 40 bucks wasn't really forty bucks. It was a trade for an as new Lincoln ac tombstone I bought at a yard sale for the 40 buck asking price. Redundant, it was bought solely as trading material.

If I do it right that 600 is about to become a 24 inch oscillating 1924 floor fan and a 1958 Eames swedish modern recliner. It's a trade with a GJ member.

To you the chair is worthless and the fan is odd.
To me, you alls man/love overvalue, now now now, gotta have it now wilton and anvil thing is odd.

If it weren't for the hype, you wouldn't look at a hollow jaw wilton twice.

BTW :
I really want an anvil that has been completely worn out. Any brand.
I'll trade that wilton 600(it needed nothing but I went ahead and cleaned and regreased it.) for a worn out mushroomed anvil of similar weight.

Edit: i did sell a wilton.
A baby on that swivel head.
I paid 15 for it in a paper wrapper, unwrapped since the factory. It came with some rc airplane stuff.
No one local would trade.
Sold as a buy it now for 85 on ebay.

The wife and I probably walked past a half dozen 4" Wiltons among others today at the Pittsburgh Parts-o-Rama that were listed at $75-150 with zero interest. Others are welcome to disagree but reality seems vastly different than GJ or eBay pricing.

^part-o-rama is different than online-related business (CL, eBay, or GJ) ; it's the seller's background that determine the selling price.

Two words: AMERICA .... CAPITALISM

Were they made in USA Wilton Bullets or the chinese junk Wilton has been selling for the last decade or so?

That sir would be a nice find at $150. it's in excellent condition. It still has the original finger stops, the towers show absolutely no abuse, the anvil is near perfect, and I would bet the jaws are only lightly used. That's a 60ish 9400 and I sold one with a swive base almost as nice for $280 on EBay not long ago. $150 an I'd be a happy camper

These were all old American iron at a mostly automotive swap meet, a couple thousand vendors and ~30k buyers so no small event by any means. It took SWMBO and I five hours to make a lap and we stopped at maybe 10% of the vendors.

As mentioned above, reality and eBay/craigs/GJ/online are two vastly different worlds with different audiences. The want-it-now with free shipping crowd dont care much for price, so long as its cheaper than the completed listings eBay cherry-picks for their search then it must be a good value.

I have two Wilton 400S that came to me in perfect condition.

One was free, the other I (happily) paid $185 for.

Vises (and anvils) are in no shortage around here, and are STILL a hot commodity.

I even seem to come across old Delta Unisaws about once a month for a near-steal.

But an old 'camelback' pattern or Clausing drill press?

I'm pretty sure that I'll see a flawless Dallas Cowboys season, find the Los Almagres, and see a re-release of the Ford Excursion before i find one of either!!!
