I acquired this Wilton vise this past weekend on Craiglist:

The owner had four of these for sale and had several of his own. They came out of a machine shop that he worked at that went out of business years ago.

I was the first one there so I got to inspect all four vises and got the best pick of them.

I started to clean the vise by using a wire brush wheel and good ole' sandpaper. I do not have a sand blaster so that is a no go.

I will be using this vise so I am looking to paint it with a durable paint.

I have seen several threads on this and am stuck on what paint to use.

I am considering the following paints:

Duplicolor Engine Paint

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Rusty Metal Primer and Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Oil Based

What are your thoughts on these paints?

Anyone have better results with better paint choices?

The posting on craigslist-Akron says its been deleted by the author.

Had I had $400 to blow without catching hell from the wife I would have bought them all.

The owner had 3 of his own in his garage that were not for sale.

Those are excellent vises. I've got a similar one but not on a swivel mount. Things are damn near indestructible. If you paid $100, pat yourself on the back for a great deal.

So if I totally strip that old white paint, which also has grey under it, and don't paint it, what should I protect it with?

It's a vise which I am going to put to use, but shouldn't it have some protection from the elements of Ohio weather, etc.?

I removed a couple coats of paint off my vise, and decided to leave it bare for now. I didn't want to screw it up by trying to paint it, plus, it is a vise I use. Rubbed some oil on it, let it sit over night, then wiped off the excess. Its not a Wilton, but I am stll looking for one...

That looks great. I agree with the others....you should have bought them all, and if not feasible, at least one or two more.

Personally, I prefer a little color in my shop, and I will probably paint my next vise restoration a bright red, possibly using an epoxy type paint for that extra durability we all like. Some vises are for the usin', and others just for the lookin' at.
