Hey guys, I recently helped my brother in law move out of his house. I found that in the basement behind all of his wife’s holiday decorations was a workshop. The previous owner left everything. My brother in law told me they just started filling the space with decorations. Once we moved them I saw what was there. I found tons of old snap on tools, sk tools, Kennedy tool box’s, wrench’s, ratchets, sockets, hammers, torque wrenchs, impact drivers, and more. I then noticed this vise. Can anyone tell me what’s it worth? And if it’s worth it to restore it? I’ve seen prices all over for all different models. Not sure what the deal is with this one. My brother in law is not mechanically inclined what so ever and instructed me to throw all the tools in the dumpster. He said he has no use for them! I took everything home free of charge, including the vise.

First off - getting that for free earns you a major YOU ****. that said unscrew the sliding jaw all the way out until it comes out of the vise body. turn the sliding jaw over and look at the key way piece , there should be a date stamped on it so you will know its age . I have two wiltons , one the same as yours from 1970 the other smaller from the 40's. I use mine hard so no restoring for me. I have seen them listed for 400.

How wide are the vise jaws?

Looks like they're in the 3.5 - 4" range. If you list it on CL for $100 it will sell within the hour. List it for $200 and it will be gone in the next few days.

That vise doesn't need restoration. Clean it and go after the yellow paint with Scotchbrite or steel wool. Then lube it an use it.

The 101028 is a 4" machinist vise. You'll be hard pressed to find something better.

We need to see pictures of the rest of the tools so we can be jealous.

Even MORE jealous than getting just that one vise in exchange for whatever work you did in helping move.

:+1: on the suckage

If you don’t need the swivel feature, I’d be happy to give you $100 for the base and hardware.

So it's a Wilton vise no.400S, with the last casting of that style before they went to an improved model in 1971. The date-stamp on the bottom of the slide should be between (1968-1974), if my database is correct.

That's a nice "user" vise in my opinion. Clean it up, lube it and use it!

I certainly don't want to be offensive but your brother in law doesn't sound very bright. You **** too by the way. :D

I've bought and sold many WILTON Bullet vises like that. Depending on your location and availability of Wilton vises determine price. Vise and jaw condition contributes to price.
Any decent WILTON by me is a easy $200.00. The last one I sold was a 9400.
Great shape and I got $350.00.

****, this is my fear with my tools! I am going to get old and no one knows the value of them

Ok Dirt Biker... Post the pics of the rest of the tools.
You need to find what your Sister and Brother in law like and surprise them with a very nice gift. The vice is worth $300, tools could be $1000.
What, you can't afford $1300 in cash? Find something to restore and bust your a$$ to get it done. Don't want to do that? Sell the tools and buy what they need... Heck, even if it's bitcoin. Best part is you can find a deal and have like 11.5 months to work on it.

Trust me, karma will find you. How do you want to be found?

Congrats on the suckage!! If everything works as it should, that's about $200 or more. Clean it up, lube it and it will last you forever.

Mr. N. I just spent over 4 days hauling every single item out of there house to another house as well as 2 other storage units. And Obviously I will not ask for anything, regardless of the tools I found and got to keep. I’m just fine with karma.

Good man.
You’ve already spent 4 days of your time and effort. What would a professional moving company had charged for 30 man hours of labor? You earned the nice Wilton and whatever else they were going to toss.
Sounds like a win-win situation.

Based on my move this summer...about 40 to 45 per man hour if buying a couple hours. A 4 person crew when scheduling 3 or more hours at a time was around 150-170/hour

Dirtbiker,

Thats a You **** for sure.

I've restored a lot of bullets and that is the cleanest one I've seen out on the wild, yes it has someone's paint spray on it but it looks like it was never used, By looking at the photo's you posted; there's zero marks on top of the jaws, the anvil, none on the side of jaws and none on the body (casting), not even a scratch; looks pristine, the handles look straight and both rubber finger savers are still on the handle.

Aside from the paint spray, it looks like new old stock. Well done and enjoy!
