I have a Wilton end vise and it is a very good vise. Probably use it more than my bench vises. Mine doesn't have the L shape to the jaws but I think I would actually prefer the L shape, I've had plenty of time where I've wished I had more clearance under the jaws. The ad doesn't mention anything about a speed screw or quick release. I might consider passing on it if it doesn't have one. An end vise without a speed screw is annoying IMO. I think $80 is an OK price but the ad is a month old for a reason.

Edit: I like the 'boyproof' in the ad.

I'd suppose it's fair but it's not a bargain, for whatever reason woodworking vises don't seem to hold their value like mechanic's vises do.

There wasn't much else out there. There is an old me with a wooden turned handle. Reminded me of my grandfathers work bench. Other than needing a paint job, it seemed useful. I assume the speed screw is nice, but my regular vise requires turning the handle, so I assumethis is no different. Would be nice, I suppose , but not a deal breaker

Todd: around here you can usually get a 10 to 12 inch wood vise for $75-150 which are a lot beefier than the little 6 and 7 inch ones. I have a 6 inch wood vise and it might weigh 5 pounds or in that range and my 6 inch old US bench vises weigh about 150 pounds.

i think you'll be disappointed with the one you are looking at, but if it's close you might want to check it out in person. Record is an English made wood vice with the quick release and i think some Wiltons and a few other vises have that, but I'm still learning about wood vises.

PM me with your email and i'll email you pictures of a wood vise i could ship to you if you can't find one locally.

Thanks the for the info! I'm not stuck on wilton. I have a couple bullets and figured I couldn't really go wrong. I would be up for taking a look at what you have. This Wilton is across town so I'm not jumpin out of my chair. As someone else noted, neither is anyone else!

If the L shape is well suited for your workbench and projects then go get it.

I'd prefer a larger std. style with quick release like the old Records from England.

I have a plywood and 2x4 bench. It's about 7 ft long by 40" or so. I am setting up a shop and have used a wood vise s couple times. going to keep shopping. :).

bout 150 pounds.

+1

But I'd hold out for a vintage 10-12" vise with the quick release nut. A hundred years ago, people made their living with wood products and their tools were designed to work all day long. My wood vise is is a Morgan 200A and has the groove in the spindle for quick release---you lock it with a 1/2 turn of the handle. I've owned many wood vises over the years, and that style is simply the easiest and most durable I've found. Records are ok, but not as stout as the vintage USA iron, and UK-made Records are no longer a bargain as well. Good Luck (btw, that's not my Morgan, but it's like that)

I am looking for a woodworking vise. Is this Wilon a good unit? This will be for general basement homebrew woodworking. Fair price ?

Thanks!

I just found on CL in the same area a very nice model wood vise:

That vise has a "solid" nut (not quick release) and therefore commands less value. It would be a good deal at $40 or less. In addition, the plant where it was made is about a mile from my house, though they no longer manufacture tools there.

Well. Through the magic of craigslist and some money I was able to secure a vise today.

It's a 10 inch Wilton that I paid $40 for. I paid $20 to have it delivered to me. It was an hour each way for the guy. . So for 60 bucks all in, I'm pretty happy. It needs a little grease on the screw, and some jaws.

Todd: it looks like a keep and probably has the quick release you wanted. one thing i would do before mounting it would be to find a couple nice pieces of oak or other type of wood to screw on to each side of the jaws. also a little grease on the main screw because there doesn't seem to be any.

one tip when cutting things that are being held in your vise maybe put a shop rag over the open screw so you don't have to clean it and grease it as often.

congrats
