Every time i have to move the lawn mower or lawn vacuum up the steps to the upper level, i have to pull them up the steps. I want to install a small winch to help pull these up. Any ideas?

lol a winch for a lawn mower? honestly just drag it with a rope or use a hand truck bro. save yourself the money. if you really need one those cheap harbor freight come-alongs work fine for that kinda stuff. way simpler than rigging up an actual winch setup
I am looking for a specific solution not asking for a money saving alternative. I didn’t include “bluetooth” controller in the OP, because it might be beyond the innovation limit here. Just looking for an idea. Thank you, it was late.

A picture or better description would really be helpful. Are we talking about 3 steps or 30.
Thank you. I guess the steps are a 20 foot run of low angle steps that I drag equipment back up. The steps are such that with a little effort I can move the wheel(s) up one step at a time. I could mount a small winch, hidden in the bushes on the side of the stoop, just to help me pull it up… i dunno….a ramp would make a winch unnecessary, but would be a major gig. A rail? I dunno.

Look …understand this, i am trying hard not to be rude and vulgar in response, “bro”. You have no idea what this situation is about. I am looking for a specific solution not asking for a money saving alternative. I didn’t include “bluetooth” controller in the OP, because it might be beyond the innovation limit here. Just looking for an idea. A handtruck? A come along? Drag it with a rope? Fk, why didnt I think of that. Thanks for responding. I should have been more specific about what a small winch is.

This seems a little over the top...

I bolded the important part. No, we don't. A few of us have asked for more information to better give you an answer, but rather then providing a few details you post this.

I mentioned in a different thread over the weekend how it's more and more difficult to engage around here, this is a perfect example...people are willing (and very able) to help, but aren't mind readers and don't need to be berated

The reply that triggered that post deserved the response you quoted

Here's a 120v option, but it only has 16 ft of cable

120v and 35ft cable

How wide are the stairs? If there is room, maybe you could build in some ramps at just the right spots for the mower but not make the stairs totally ramps
YEASH, I can take the average wheel base and use something like angle iron to fashion an inconspicuous ramp! heck, it could even be pressured treated lumber at first. Those small AC winches would be ideal! In the day i could simply carry the equipment up. Now I try to work smarter not harder. I appreciate all the responses, very helpful….it was late last night. THANK Youtz!

I like it! The HF solution sounds workable. It's even on sale for ITC members. If you are not already ITC, the $30 off would pay for your membership, and you can sign up at checkout. HF also has several ramp options, and with a winch, there is no need to worry about slope. At this point in life I always go aluminum when I can to save the weight. HF has a wider folding ramp I like. You could use 3 sets of ramps to go the full length of your stairs.

If you decide to fabricate your own ramp, you might want to go aluminum and avoid going heavy duty to save weight.

Pictures of your solution would be welcome if you decide to do it. :coffee:

Would not the proper GJ response be to purchase a second mower and vacuum to keep in the upper portion of the yard?:D
I had that thought, too! And mowers and vacs are not super pricey compared to a lot of other equipment! :coffee:

BTW, I love your user name!

The proper GJ response will be to overthink this in about four pages of posts...

To the OP, I think I understand your problem. There is no rolling access to the upper level that you need to mow. Harbor Freight has a number of small winches in both 12V and 120V versions. I think it would be smart to rig some sort of ramp on the steps that can be quickly installed and removed. You might find that the ramps alone are enough and you don't need the winch, but I understand that the convenience might be a feature. To be honest, a second, used mower is probably the most cost effective solution.

It sounds like we are talking about a multi-level yard that has step-only access to the uppermost portion, correct? Building a workable solution will cost more than a second mower. Use a blower to move the leaves to the lower section in the fall so a second vacuum is not needed. Filling in a portion of the steps as ramps similar to mike931x's first picture would allow you to drive the mower up if it is self-propelled. If it is not self-propelled, upgrading to one that is would be more economical and faster than engineering any kind of convenient pulley/winch system.

Facebook market place for a second mower is what I might do. Add a small storage shed on the other level to store it. That of put in the sidewalk you have always wanted that curves and slopes between levels. Must be worse with a wheel barrow going up and down the steps.

Thanks…it is not just for mowers-lawn vacuums and generators….i think I have some constructive ideas from you and others and I appreciate the chirping from the peanut gallery to move things along and keep folks engaged and active! Cheers!

Let gravity work for you.
A wheeled device, wagon of some kind, loaded with appropriate weight.
Rope and pulley.
Your load goes up, wagon comes down.
Your load comes down, wagon goes up.
Proven workable over thousands of years.
