Planning to install a 120v winch in the ceiling of the garage. I have engineered joists so was wondering about the best way to connect this to the ceiling and joists. Can I just put a piece of 2x or 4x on the floor in the second story that spans the joists, and then drill through floor and 2x to bolt through?

What size winch are you using and how much weight to you intend to lift?

i would not recomend hanging much from the truss framing like that. they are designed to load from the top, not hold weight from the bottom. i put some 1x12 across a few of mine to lay on and install a new outlet in the ceiling. cracked the sheetrock joint with just my weight (250lb) you can see the ceiling flex when i walk on them.

Not a good idea for the reasons given.

BTW, not to be picky, but you are talking about a hoist.
Winchs pull a horizonal load.
Hoists lift verticaly.

The testing and load rateings are very different.

Guys read it over again, I'm pretty sure that he is intending to "hang it" from the floor of the 2nd story. Thus he would be loading the truses from the top as intended.

OP, Did they give you a load rating per unit for the 2nd story floor? You are going to have to distrubite the load, how and how much will depending on the rating and the load you want to lift.

Built it myself, I don't have a load rating for it. I will be using it to lift outboard motors, 2 strokes, up to 70 hp. Maybe the occasional deer, but mine seldom weigh more than 150 lbs.

I bought a Warn 120V PULLZALL winch and unk 4 1-1/4" holes in my concrete about 20" deep. I bought 4 each 1" x 24" galvanized pipes and screwed each UPSIDE down to the ends of the pipes. With another drill, I reamed out the holes to about 1=3/4" for a distance of about 3/4" deep. I dropped each of the pipe+ flange combinations in place and screwed them to the concrete with concrete sinks.

I drop a 1" x 20" steel eye bolt into any one of these holes, clip the hook from the PULZALL onto the eye bolt, and I can pull anything into or out of the garage.

By being portable, I can still take the winch elsewhere if needed.

I just hang up the eye bolt and the winch oin two hooks, they are out of the way.

What does the floor consist of? What is the span on the trusses?
