Winchester knives are decent, but nothing special.

I would recommend the Kershaw Leek:

http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Onion-Folding-Knife-Speed/dp/B0009VC9Y0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319417620&sr=8-1

That one looks nice, but I don't want to spend to much because he seems to lose them durning winter when he is out plowing. I remember he had bought one at TSC and the tip broke after the first use. I cannot remember the name thou. The ones I got him in the passed seemed to last up pretty good when I bought the $5 winchester knifes. I have looked at browning knifes also, and they seem pretty nice.

Winchesters are actually a good option for a working pocketknife. Yes they are Chinese (usually - some are Taiwan), and yes they are cheap but that's what makes them good workers.

I like the folding utility knives for the fact that if I break the blade I can just put in a new one, and if I lose it, I don't really care (except for one really cool one that I got from P&H that I lost somewhere).

Well in that case go with Winchester. I have a few and they've held up pretty well!

When I was up in Mackinaw City, Mi I went into a little farm store and they had case knifes. They looked pretty cool.

I know case it made in the USA. I like to buy more USA made things for him. Have you ever heard anything bad about case knifes?

i just am looking for some ideas. I already bought a lot for xmas, but need some small gifts for stocking stuffers.

Get him something you can put a lanyard on with a small carabiner clip...

Are you saying that this might help where he doesn't lose it? If it is attached to a lanyard?

If so he loses everything. He throws his truck keys down and forgets where he put them a minute after.

Don't think anything will help him. LOL.

Case knives are awesome, but they are pretty expensive and will bring a grown man to tears at the loss of one.

I believe that Buck had a nice knife with the lanyard clip on it, but I don't remember where I saw them.

One end of the lanyard attached to him, the other to the knife...

If he loses the knife then, he's really lost :D

I prefere the USA made Buck Knives, mainly the Buck 110. But then again I'm a biggame hunter and that's mostly what I use knives for. Around the garage or in my tool chest I just use a stanley utility knife. I also have an old stockman with my wood working tools. The WRCase Trappers are also great outdoor knives too.

Depending on what he uses a knife for, another "Pocket knife" option is one of the folding box cutters. folds like a pocket knife, locks open, but uses box cutter blades. Many look nice also, are fairly flat (but not very small...), and ar no huge loss if lost.

The most useful knife I've ever owned or carried and I've had many.
Victorinox Soldier ("old model", now discontinued). I think it was about $21 off of Amazon a few years ago.

Everything you need and nothing you don't. Thin enough for comfortable pocket carry too.

While the "new" model Soldier is too bulky for my likes, the "Cadet" and "Pioneer" models are very similar to my "old model" Soldier.

I don't like Winchester Knives. I'd break a mans arm over one of my Case knives, lol I only buy the case knives with the Chrome Vanadium blades. Ugly up fast but hold an edge. I picked up a beautiful bone stag Med Stockman the other day at our local Bass Pro shops. I'll look through all of the model until I find the one that I like best. I still own a yellow handle trapper from when I was a kid. Case warranties the knives for life. I've used the service a few times and no hassles. I paid about 50 dollars out the door for the last one.

I too agree with that. I also own an aluminum scaled Soldier issue model. Mine is the version made my Wenger and date stamped 97. Very practical folding knife. I keep mine in my small survival pouch.

My wife was in Wal-Mart a few months ago and she headed over to sporting goods to pick me up a scope cover. She saw a Buck 119 fixed blade on Clearance for 27.97. Of course it came home, lol

My very first pocket knife was very similar. Mine was a US Army issue. I forgot the maker of it at the time. My Dad bought it for me when I joined the Cub scouts. I lost it while swiming. I was so proud of that knife

Yes, and while the Wenger version is not quite as "refined" as the Victorinox, I do believe that Wenger still makes the Soldier in the old style.

I think this one looks cool.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Winchester-Folding-Sheath-Knife/15125889

anyone on here ever buy any? or use winchester brand knifes?

I have bought a couple for the boyfriend in the passed and they were the $5.00 ones and worked pretty good, but he loses them.

Any ideas on some good knifes? I think that may be his last christmas gift.

Get him one of these, a kersaw blurr with speed safe handle...He will not lose this one. $75.00 but I pick mine up for $39.00 on E-bay. They also make red and camo. The speed safe assisted opening he will love. If you get him this knife it will put a smile on his face you will not believe. I'm still smiling..:)

Well honestly, I don't think he would even think about usuing a clip. He gets where he rushes into things and forgets easy, so I still dont think it would work.

When we go into stores he hands me his keys because he ends up losing them or forgets they are in his hand.

I really don't know what he uses his knifes for when i get them as gifts. I have got him a knife every christmas. It does come in handy as he uses them a lot durning plowing I think to open the salt bags. I think he uses it mostly for work or if he needs to cut something quick.

I will have to check it out when I am their and look in sporting goods. I would like to find a camo knife as he does like camo.

Looks like a nice kinfe. I will have to look around on Ebay. I do have a few weeks before I have to actually buy one. If I got something like this, I would def. get camo. ALSO $75.00 is a little pricey as he loses them. Will have to check things out :) If it would put a smile on his face, thats all I'm happy about. I already think I got him to much as it is, when christmas comes he better be happy. I put a $20 limit on everyone, it's just with him, it was hard.

If this is what he primarily needs one for, the folding box cutter is a good choice as Salt + damp isn't good for any knife, even SS.

I'd bet you could get one with a clip AND a place for a lanyard... :D

For slicing open bags (like feed bags), I agree with Outlaw here... the folding box cutter knife is hard to beat. I have a Kobalt box-cutter and I use it all the time... its not too expensive, so if I lose or misplace it, I can afford a replacement! And I don't have to sharpen it, just stick a new blade in. My Kobalt knife has the pocket clip, but I see that the new ones have a place for a lanyard.

At around ten bucks, you could buy two and keep one for a spare. Give him the spare knife when he loses the first one.

I will say that I did buy a Winchester pocket knife set (from Big 5 Sporting Goods) for basic pocketknife use some time ago, and they do an OK job. I don't use my nice knives for daily work (afraid I will lose them), so the Winchester knives, while not USA-made, are good cheap worker knives for the price. And the Winchester pocketknives have the steel pocket-clip, which I really like.

I bought one of those years ago. To this day I have not idea why I bought it, it sits on a shelf in my gunsafe and rarely ever gets pulled out of it's sheath. Nice knife, but..... to me it's just too large and cumbersome to use for field dressing elk with, way too big for deer too. I prefere much shorter blades for gutting and skinning.

Most of those were made under contract by Camillus, now defunct and out of business as of a few years ago.
