Wind bell for the wife

Just for kicks...
Scrounged an old out of date CO2 tank and a rural mailbox door at the scarp yard, added some old chain and a new eye bolt (Damn I hated to spend the money for a new eyebolt). too far to reach my arm in to thread a nut on the eye bolt so I welded some rod to the nut and put a hook on the bottom for the clapper chain. It is about 42" tall from eyebolt to wind catcher and has a beautiful deep gong sound like a temple bell. Has a wood clapper for now but I might swap it out to an old softball or something to soften the sound up some. No wimpy tinkling ding-dings here. If we had neighbors it might be a problem on a windy night but the closest one is directly behind the bell in the pic- not quite a 1/2 mile away.
The wife loves it as is, no paint. I hung it out at the edge of our back 40. My mother in law likes it too but didn't think her condo association would go along with it.:D

yup. different sizes, different tones. I'm looking for some more material. I told my wife that my "art" has real value- and I think its about $80 per ton right now.

With the 70 mph winds we had last week, and more planned tonight, that "wind bell" would be belting a tune in these parts !! ;)

+1 for at least one more size wind bell friend to join in . . . ie bass & tenor. :D

THAT is a great idea.

I may have to borrow it if the local welding supply refuses to refill my CL tanks in a year or two.

I'd strip the paint for an even coat of rust. You could sell that at the local arts festival for $hundreds...

That is dual purpose. Wind gong and perfect for 22 target practice. I would be more tempted to shoot at it then wait for the wind

I'm going to make one of these for sure. Gonna use some smaller oxygen tanks and some old SCBA tanks from the FD.

How about a 100 lb propane tank for the next one?
You may need a bigger tree.

Ayuh,... Been there, done that,...

The "Tone" from a propane tank, ain't nothin' like a hi-pressure tank,....

The wind don't move it much at all, But I hung this one on a big pine near the entry to the family lodge at Chemo Pond Me. as sorta an arrival announcement bell,...

Dad named the lodge Bondarosa,...
I added that with 99% nickle weldin' rod,...
One of a few signs I've built that way,....

And a couple more little brothers in there  https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=43&v=NGUP8oc9Bgs

I need to go down to the local welding company now and see if they have one or two old tanks. I have a small set in the shed that my dad owned, but no paperwork. They are medium sized. If I can't get them filled, they will be in the cutoff saw. :rocker:

Like most things, there is science behind even a simple wind chime. If you google "making wind chimes" you can find out more than you ever wanted to know. In particular, there is an ideal spot on the tube to hang the chime from. Hung from one end, it'll ring, but hung from the right place the tone will last much longer.

Check your local fire department.....some of the folks may still have some of the older steel air pack and oxy. cylinders. They make great chimes. I will get a picture for ya, a local fella makes asst. chimes from old cylinders. He has one using an "M" size welding cyl. It's huge!
