Is there a standard size for these and standard electrical requirements? I need to tell the architect as he seems clueless on these systems. I need to know what size hole to frame in.

I'm planning on using two. One for my shop and one for a room over the garage.

Thanks all.

You may want to consider buying the "motel style" underwindow unit that is used for heating and cooling. Be comfortable year round. That is what we are going to use. I had a website information on it and of course now I go to look for it and can't find it right off the bat. I do remember that I thought they were very reasonably priced.

I've got the motel style upstairs in my garage & have been pleased. I have a combination window ac/heater downstairs & don't like it as much. It doesn't perform as well. If you'll do a websearch you can find the dimensions you need. I can provide more info on what I have if you'd like but not tonite. It may take a few days.

Yeah- do a google search for PTAC, I have two Amana PTAC units that are heatpumps. Find the one you think you want to buy and then download the manual and that will give you the dimensions. The standard size is about 42" by 16". You need a metal sleeve for the unit to go into and a grill for the outside in addition to the PTAC itself. I bought the sleeves ahead of time and had my contractor install them during framing (they came with directions on how to frame them in). Then I just slipped in the unit and added the grill when I was ready to use them.

PTAC is what you need (pronounced peetak), it is short for packaged terminal air conditioner. They are commonly used in hotels, because they allow heat in one room while air conditioning in another room. A boiler and chiller arrangement to do the same requires a 4 pipe system, which is expensive. The PTAC is simple and inexpensive, but costs more to operate than a central system in a large hotel arrangement. However, in a small application like a garage, the PTAC is essentially a central system, because you only have one or two.

Thanks all! I am in search of a PTAC system now. It looks like a need a big one. My shop is 900 sf or so.

Found my note! :bounce:It was at airconditioner.com they are in Van Nuys, Calif. 1-818-785-4151. I was looking at the Cooline HHB12ATH with 12750 BTU for 478.00 Height is 17" & Width is 26" & Depth is 28 1/2". There are others shown on their site as well.
