My workshop is a detached garage - concrete block, 10' ceilings, attic storage roof, minimal insulation. The main area is 24' x 24', with a side area of 16' x 14'. I'm in central Florida. I don't need to be cold in summer or hot in winter, just looking to moderate the extremes. I see that both LG and Fridgedaire make an 18,000 btu window unit that also heats that seems to be what I need.

I'd appreciate any comments you have regarding brand and sizing.

Thanks for the input.

Their both name brands so thats a plus. Your pocket book, available/adequate power in your shop, ease of installation and location, humidity levels etc..etc.. all can/should factor in on your decision. Find one thats reasonably priced, has a warranty and is servicable. You could check out consumer reports or other reviews on-line to help in your decision.

You might also look into a PTAC unit, like the ones they install in motel rooms. I'm using an Amanna unit in my 16X22 garage in Alabama because I can set it to keep the garage from freezing or getting too hot automatically and then turn it on for cooling or heating when needed.

Wow, I was just about to ask the same type of question.

I've got a 40x30x14 fully insulated shop with two window and a special 240 plug put right next to one for one of these big Heat/AC units. But I also wondered how effective they really were. They are definitely expensive, but if they BTU's are close to what they say, I think it would be good to at least keep the shop above 50 degrees, and below 85.

Is that one of those heat pump/ AC deals? My only concern with one of those is I have two MASSIVE doors, if I open one to pull something in, the air will exchange in under two minutes. If it takes 2 hours to get back to reasonable temperature, I don't think that will do me any good.

Sorry, OP, I hope I didn't hijack.
