window covering if security grates are installed?

I have security grates on the inside of my windows and one single man door. However, I'd like to fashion something to keep anyone from walking into my yard and looking in. The grating has 1"x.5" diamond holes in it.

My one idea was to get one of those retractable janitor/security keyring on a 3' cable and attach it to the bottom of a pull down shade. I can then mount the holder on myside of the grating and open and close the shade that way.

I was thinking and I am going to install a couple 3/4x3/4 1/8 wall tubeing welded to some angle iorn.I will still be able to open the window.

How do you open the window or see out with all that mesh?

How about good old mini blinds they could be hung on that window from the bottom of the cabinet . On windows without cabinets above just mount them to the top of the window frame . I have cheap ones in my garage I just take them down every so often and wash them off with the hose and put them back up once dry ( when they start looking to bad their cheap buy new ones ) .

I made mine from 3/8" rebar from Menards and some channel cut-offs that were free. It's not pretty and doesn't have any paint yet but I think it will do the job. They will allow me to open a window without any interference or having to remove them. Before I hung the dry wall, I added extra wood around the doors and windows. My intentions are to lag the brackets in around the doors then a couple of 2x4s across them.

Sounds like a simple old fashion window shade will do the trick? I plan on using the mini blinds between the window and grating. The down side to my current set-up is that somebody would actually have to break a window before they'd see that the bars are in place?

It's large sized mesh...I don't really do much window watching though in the shop ..let's the light in mostly.

The windows I can open from the inside with cranks (there are small openings cut in the mesh...but mostly I open them from the outside so I can get them fully open (the crank only goes to about 7/10's) with the arms disconnected. This is rare though..only when I am getting overwhelmed with fumes on a rainy day.

need a way to access the rod from the grate. If they had an "L" adapter like a right angle drill chuck that would work.

Alkemyst I should have put it differantly hang the mini blinds on the garage side of the security screens not between the window and the screen.

that would be easy, but I cannot place them there are there is nothing to screw them into...the screens are practically flush mounted. They are effectively one with the structure, the only way to remove them would be to also remove the sheeting.

The window you showed the pic of I would screw the little pieces that hold the blind to the bottom of the cabinet . The others I would screw them to the top molding of the windows ( above the window) .

for under $5 you can get "frosting" spraypaint. Still lets a ton of light in, but cant bee seen through.. usually used for bathrooms...

You would have to remove the grate first, spray, then reapply the grate... but but better suited than mini-blinds or curtains that will hold onto dust, dirt, bugs etc..

although I guess you might be able to spray it through the grate if it isnt removable.
