Window trim thickness?

Shed windows are installed and I got the 3/4” x 3.5” PVC trim boards. But the width of the trim isn’t as thick as the window. And it sort of slides in a channel. Is that normal? And I just caulk around it to make it flush and keep it dry? Pic for reference:

ETA: I will be siding with hardiboard.

I think those windows are designed so the siding is captured under the already installed trim on the window ... If you install trim -- it's going to need another "J" channel to hide the siding ends.

What's the head trim ....

It's a shed -- But, this type of construction need a good house wrap rain screen

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up. But another question, this hardi is the same Thats on my house (see pic for reference). And I know my house windows are different but I don’t see another J channel?

You can use this trim with this window, you'll be fine. I would not caulk the trim to window joint, let it drain. No j channel is needed for the siding but you will need to caulk there.

I agree. Don't caulk the trim to the window, that will only trap water in if it does get in.. You might want flashing tape out few inches where the caulked joint will be between trim and Hardi. I try not to ever rely on caulk to be my only waterproofing, because it may fail eventually. There are lots of good window flashing videos on youtube.

Window wasn't designed to be trimmed out, and you still can use the Hardiboard siding. Wouldn't be my choice for windows, but it's a shed. Just pay attention to your flashing. Can't tell from the picture. How wide is the window flange?

Thank you both! Great advice, I won’t caulk it.

The nailing fin/flange? That’s 2” unless I misunderstood you. It’s been a pain in the *** to find the right windows for this. Made the mistake of framing it out before I had the windows. So I’m using what fits (24x36). This is the second set of windows I got. Took the first ones back because they were sliding (sideways) windows. I’m ready to be done with these damn things. Slowing me down, even if it is mostly my fault. Thanks for the good advice though.

ETA: I will be using aluminum flashing at the top of the trim as well.

Yes, that's what I meant. Never thought flanges for these types of windows(ones with j-channels incorporated) are wide enough. We'd bend up some wider coil stock L- channel to go over the flange with it to create a larger drainage plain. But sounds like you're planning on addressing added flashing already.

Is that Harde ....looks like vinyl ??

If Harde -- no J

If this is Harde -- you frame out the top trim full width w/ head flashing. The building wrap goes down over the window flange the old school way. The new way -- uses tape to flash around the window. I'm not a new way guy.

Harde should use a rain screen wrap -- but this is a shed. Also if it's Hardie -- you have to cut the lower siding to fit .. obviously. Also -- need a gap above the window and start of Harde. Don'e caulk but joints of Harde.

The head flash stopps the water

Thanks again. So I’ll do aluminum flashing over the top. For the sides and bottom do you think I should add the same rubberized Tite Seal flashing tape that I flashed the bottom/bottom-sides of the jam/sill?

No flashing tape over the bottom fin, it needs to be able to drain. Tape on sides and top only.
