If the window shakers or even a few years old could buy 5 or 6 for under $2k. A lot cheaper than installing central air. They make some that the case has a slot from top to almost bottom where the window closes down into the slot. Another type saddle over the window sill window closes down to about 2". There quieter and more efficient.
They also make a small duct hi pressure system made for retro in old houses. One brand is Space Pac.

I cooled the main floor of our 900 square foot rambler with a 12,000 BTU window unit. It would keep up just fine, but if the house was allowed to get warm, then turned on, forget about it!

The funny think was when I put in central AC everyone said I needed 24,000 BTU, I put in 18,000 and it works fine.

I am impressed that is a 1975 unit still running. Our rooftop 5 ton Trane units at my former workplace were 1967 issue and there were 3 out of 8 still running when I retired in Nov. 2017.

last year my a/c had an issue with the pan in the air handler that caused a leak. the part is unobtainable and the a/c guys kinda fixed it enough so it barely leaks...

i wound up putting in an old window unit from like 1985 in the master bed room. that sucker cooled the bedroom well and part of the living room (bed room door is where the garage man door was). if i had an actual window in the living room id have put it in there, but bay windows make that hard

I've got a couple of really old ones given to me by a customer.

Both are really heavy, super quiet and they work well. I have loaned them out to get through a replacement job.

Had an opportunity to grab a super old Carrier that was stupid heavy, but really have nowhere to put it. I would not have been surprised if it had worked. Sometimes I regret not dragging it home and trying it out. It likely predated 1970.

We remove the covers and clearcthe pans out od ours, why them make something with a corridable metal that goes in water is beyond me, but like the man said "ain't nothibg navy to last anymore"

Now that's impressive, the older ones cool better because the referigent is more toxic, so if you have an older ac unit DON'T EAT IT OR DRINK THE COOLANT!!!!! the ge I just bought you probslly can, best it gets tge bedroom down to it 66

Early in my career I poo-pooed window shakers. Thought they were noisy, inefficient, just a stop gate measure. But they do have a place.
I inherited a used one from a friend of mine. Seems like he was working at a house and the next door neighbor saw his work truck. The guy came over and said he used to work for that company, and had an old window unit that my friend could have if he wanted it. My friend took it and offered it to me. One new fan motor later and I installed it in my little shop. Has kept it livable during the summer months for years now. The comp is starting to fail, so I might just R&R the comp and keep that old buzzard going.

When it became law, I know of residential HVAC companies that would puncture the lineset on a changeout to "save time".

I do not doubt, for even a nanosecond, that venting the charge is happening todust to get it on the roof. Might have to run 300' of extension cord. Most of my equipment was 480 vac. After a couple of times found a transformer to run the reclaim.
When the law passed everyone that i new talking in supply houses were so worried about the refrigerate police. There were stories in trade mags that someone got fined have no idea if it was real. The first reclaim machines cost a lot and weigh a lot. Took two people just to get it on the roof. Took a couple of years till the machines weighed 50 lbs or less.

BUT the living Room ac unit is a 1975 Fedders 15000btu,that is capable of cooling the whole house

That is exactly the one we had growing up! 240V unit right? Ours was located in the kitchen window and it would cool it and the adjoining living room just fine. Dad had little 5,000 BTU Kenmoore unit in the master bedroom that we used to cool it and my adjoining bedroom.

About three years ago our central A/C quit on July 4th weekend when it was hot as hell and the in-laws were in town. I could personally deal with it for a few days (if for nothing else just to seem them suffer), but when my dog was looking distressed we had to get a couple of window units to get us by until the central unit could be fixed. We ended up borrowing one for the living room, and we bought a little 5,000 BTU unit for the master bedroom. Once we got the central A/C fixed (new compressor) my wife wanted to return the window unit since we had only used it for two days. I told her that we keep it in case we ever needed one again, so I placed inside a large garbage bad and stored it in the shop for two years. Sure enough, the central unit quit again (capacitor this time) so that window until was a band-aid that saved the day once again.

I don't think I'd want to see the bill if we attempted to cool our entire house with window units, but they do have their place.

I have been using an 8,000btu to cool my 900sqft main floor. Before that I had an 18,000 that came with the house but got tired of carrying it up from the basement.

The 8,000 cools it fine. And if it dies tomorrow I can go buy a brand new one for a few hundred dollars and have it working the same day.
