I think 5,000 btu will be a tad undersized for a garage especially if there is considerable air leaks and air loss. I'd maybe try an 8000 btu unit...

You probably need more like a 10k btu unit..although most recommendations I've seen on GJ are using a 12k unit and getting well chilled. Definitely make sure that you've insulated and buttoned up everything first though, otherwise it won't work, no matter what you do.

I've got a 20x26 shop with a 8500 unit and it just laughs. But I'm still in the process of insulating atm. I still figure my unit will be a bit underpowered, but I'll probably live with it, since it's only hot about 2-3 months of the year and with the insulation, I'm hoping to keep it below 85 degrees. I can still work in that temp.

Consider the mini ductless units. More efficient than window units based on my research. I'll be using some of them instead of fixing my 31yo central AC.

I have a 5000 btu window unit in my 20x20 fully insulated detached garage. All I can say is get a bigger unit. I agree with the 10,000 btu recommendation above, 8000 may be ok.

I just ordered an 18,000 unit for my 21x26x10 garage.

This thread is starting to make me think I went overboard.
