Window units vs heat pump

I'm considering using a 24,000 BTU window unit instead of a heat pump in my shop. It would seem to be much more affordable, both to buy and to run afterward. The amp draw is much lower, the shop would be heavily insulated, around 1,200 sf and only run on weekends when I'm wrenching.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

either one should work fine however i think a heat pump would better serve you. another option you may consider is a mini split heat pump i have installed several and they work great. one advantage to a mini split is you can also heat with it if needed. spned a few minutes and check them out on ebay.

Don't count out the window shaker. Window shakers use the condensate to help sub cool the high side. THis contributes to good efficiency, split units don't have that feature. The window shaker is compact and can be removed and used somewhere else. They also don't require a professional to install. They are not subject to leak problems like split units and if it breaks you go buy another unit. Split units are higher first cost and to repair. Just my $.02.

I agree with using a window unit, one drawback is poor circulation, put a box fan near it to help circulate the air. The only thing I don't like about window units is it's easier to break in.

I'll have an alarm and some glass doors anyway, so security isn't the issue. It's really more about the cost to buy one and then run it. Maybe install a couple of them on opposite sides of the room to improve circulation? I'd usually end up running my giant floor fan too anyway. It sounds like the window units can be a viable option then? Any thoughts on energy useage?

Prob will cost more to operate, but since you don't use it often and the start up costs are low. There are several units that are wall mount, might be easier(cheaper) to get one larger unit and wall mount if poss.
