Windows for block walls ?

Working on building a shop/shed with concete block. I've tried searching without success . What size and kind of window well be best with 8" block ? How does the window frame get attached to the block , should the window be flush with the outside or halfway into the block wall ? Also there are the concerns of flashing and wheather proofing.

They make windows for block walls, thats about all use here in FL. Its nice and warm here, come down and get some!

In the old days they used steel framed windows.

Talk to you block supplier.
This s not a new concern.
They will have ideas for you to pick from.

Generally, there are two different ways to go about this-
Aluminum window with large flange- mount directly to the block on the exterior of the opening. Or a standard flange so the window is mounted to a PT wood frame jamb that is bolted within the opening. Or, with this same setup you could use a vinyl window or a wood window. The PT wood frame can be mounted recessed or flush to the exterior depending on the style of trim and/or exterior finish you choose for the windows.

I do not think it is a special window for brick walls a long as they fit in the opening, but if you are laying bricks it should be a support from the top of a window opening.
Attach the window with insulation foam

Correct, I have found the best way which gives you the most choices on windows is to frame the opening with PT 2x8 and use a new construction type window with a nailing flange. this also allows you to frame out whatever size opening you need for the window without having to trim block to the window size.

My old shop made of concrete blocks had glass blocks for windows...mortared right in with everything else.

I think I understand, nailing flange. Found something on youtube but I'll need to mount a 2x8 PT frame in block, so the opening needs to be the window size plus 3" top and bottom.

I would give myself at least 1/2 inch all the way around the window, just in case somethings not square.

Total of 3" horizontally and vertically (2, 2x8 1.5" each) plus as stated previously an extra 1/2" to allow for squaring the window up. So a total opening in the block wall about 3.5" bigger than the window you are installing.

Put in replacement windows-they will make any size you want.
